I have a 2022 4xe and have taken it all over the souther California mountains and deserts. With regeneration, about 30-40% of the trip ends up being on electric. Usually I end up around 26-28 MPG overall off-road. I have been very happy with my 4xe off-road.

One big advantage of this is that you can run it in e-save and then pop over to EV mode when you want to be quiet, like attempting not to startle wildlife as you approach where you were heading or go silent if you happen to see a herd of deer or something and want to creep without scaring them off.

I ordered my 4xe Rubicon fully loaded and took delivery on May 5, 2021. We are retired and live in the mountains in AZ. We have solar panels on our house, so our electric cost is 1.25 cents per KWH. Our Jeep has a brand name 3-1/2” lift, adjustable nitrogen reservoir shocks, winch, off-road lights and full aluminum belly pan. We run on 35” KO2 tires. We have averaged 50 trails per year on the Jeep, ranging from 5 to 8 ratings. This is all background for what I’m about to tell you. We love our 4xe. You do need to learn to drive it differently than an all gas Jeep. And it does take time and practice. So a bit of our findings. We have a motor home and stay at RV parks or boondock a lot. We have an 8kw generator, so we plug in the Jeep to the generator on the 120v charger, this gives us about 4 to 6 hours of charge every day, so we usually start at the 50-70% charge rate. So here’s how we run our 4xe on trails. 1. We use e-save, runs the engine and charges the battery on the way to the trail. 2. On the trail we always run on Hybrid. 3. As soon as we start crawling, we switch to 4 Low. 4. We drive on manual shift 80% of the time and always when doing an obstacle. 5. Always two pedal and manual shift through obstacles. 75% of obstacles we do in 2nd gear. No shifting, unless we have to slow down and need to drop to first for the torque. 6. The torque is amazing. Feather the throttle, keep a little brake on, manual shift and you can climb rocks like I never could with the gas Jeep. Yes, it does take time and practice. I’ve had quite a few comments from more experienced jeepers than me on the torque to the wheels of this Jeep. I always approach an obstacle in manual, and in hybrid, so the engine is running. Even when I climb a step from a dead stand still, I’m in 2nd gear. My Jeep, with no passengers, but with full fuel and recovery gear weights in at 5960# It was 5360# brand new, with a full tank, no passengers or recovery gear. I usually finish trails, different distances, but 5 to 6 hours long, with 20-30% charge. On the plus side. I get 19 miles of all electric range on the 35” tires, 21 miles on the factory 33” tires. When we go into town, our round trip is 30 miles, so we get 19 miles at 1.25 cents per mile and 11 miles at. 22.2 cents per mile. So our trip fuel cost is $2.68 versus $6.67 on all electric. Will the extra cost of the 4xe payoff, No probably not, but it is nice going a month without having to stop at the gas station AND it is a blast when you get to put all that torque on the ground, from a dead start. That’s what amazes people watching, how you can literally crawl over rocks, without having to use the get the engine revs up. Oh yeah, one other thing, at the traffic light, you can leave behind every other Jeep, except the ones with V-8’s. Even with the 35’s.
  • In that new camera view on your head, Tommy, you do really see and feel the difficulty of the obstacles. That was crazy!
  • I have a Willys 4xe, no options & soft top Msrp mid 56k. Anyways I get about 26+ EV range, hybrid mpg of 33-38 mpg and 24.5 mpg for gas only. Covers about 95% of my commute. After owning a Tesla, F150 Powerboost and now a 4xe, I can say the PHEV is the way to go. Fill up a few times a year, never get stranded like a full EV and not be limited on road trips. They really are the sweet spot.

The release pics of the 2024 wranglers show a much larger entertainment screen (11.3?). Interior looks like a 2023 with the smaller 8.3 in screen.

I love the pov reviews like this one keep up the fantastic work guys

Hope everyone has a good Wednesday...Thanks for another great video 👏👏👏

I love my 23 4xe Rubicon. Spring time getting 26-28 electric and 22 in gas. I checked my mileage and with 1700 miles on the odometer 164 have been gas.

Just got a 2023 rubi hybrid. Looking forward to some off-road adventures.
  • @joezephyr
Excellent video thank you. As I have a Sport, the pitch and roll is displayed in the instrument cluster and I have that displayed when ever I am off road.
  • @trevinated
Hey Tommy, when you use that esave, it'll still use electricity when you step on it. If you don't want it to go down before you get to your destination, set e-save to charge as well.
  • @DuaneCaldwell
I think we see more of the road just in front of the bumper with the POV camera, but with Tommy being so tall, I feel like the camera is constantly pointed down to mostly feature the dash and the top of the hood. It might be good for filler and highlights with more typical camera perspectives showing other views in the video.
  • I’m glad you are running this with heat on etc…. There is no purpose in BS people nicely done!!!
  • Tommy you need to make a t-shirt with a mini on the front and the quote “it’s about to get crazy”
  • The 4xe is a bit challenging to modulate but 2 footing is the way to go. Also recommend trying the offroad cruise control. And just like she said, when I feel like I want more control I use manual mode. Also there is SO much torque in 4lo that I also only use it when I need to. Having a Tazer also helps so that I can lock up in 4hi, which is great in EV because it just has so much instant torque. @vic B did an amazing write up. I agree 100% with what he said. That is exactly how I end up driving my 4xe most of the time offroad as well.

Does anyone know how the power box works on the 2024 Jeep wrangler 4xe? I tried using mine while camping (to run a space heater) I got a charging error, but it did power the outlets in the box, but it never kicked the motor on so my battery was dead by 3 am. I can’t find any info on how to use the power box.
