Fish Game Arcades Are Popular In NC — But Are They Legal?

North Carolina has banned video poker for 12 years, but now fish game tables are the new trend. According to arcade operators, they’re following state law because the money a person can win is based on skill not luck. Officials say otherwise.

  • In California they call them slap houses. They rent residential homes, shade the windows and sound proof the walls. Every room including the garage. You walk up at 4am neighborhood is silent, house looks like any other, you knock, they have lots of surveillance cameras but they are hidden well. The manager greets you and you play. Methamphetamine is smoked openly as are cigarettes. If you win and you actually do a guy comes around and pays you out. I'm sure they pay for these machines quickly so if the cops raid the house,oh well. They sell power tools, stolen cigarettes etc. Some are protected by gangs, they surprisingly are very friendly unless you act stupid. The whole thing is bizarre.
  • I've never seen these games, but I know a fair amount about gambling and slot machine design. With just a little research I was able to find the manufacturer's spec sheets for these games. The operator can set the "hold" (also euphemistically called the "skill level") anywhere from 15% to 50%. 15% is the maximum hold allowed in Nevada by the gaming commission. In other markets, especially where regulation and enforcement are spotty, it can be whatever the market will bear. In other words, the operator is free to crank up the hold as high as he thinks his customers will tolerate, and still keep coming back. I do know one thing, and that is that no one opens a casino or "gaming arcade" to lose money. These machines would not exist if they did not provide a long-term advantage to the owner/operator. I would also agree with the commenter who observed that it is worth noting where these games are located, and where they are not.
  • Seen these machines a lot in kids arcades in Malaysia for years. I would always see adults playing those and I thought, why are they so interested in kids fishing games. While kids would play racing and shooting games at the arcade. Instead of winning money, they win tokens to be used to play at other machines.

I’m vacationing in Florida and saw one of these. Any gambling attractions a certain crowd but most just go to have fun and socialize.
  • This is not a game of skills, its basically gambling! i was addicted to this game and spent alot of money losing rather than winning. till covid strikes and im thankful.
  • At this Vietnamese poker game, they have this machine. Minimum $30 to play. Game runner says max payout is $13k. That’s all I know about that game
  • Shooting $2 dollars over here and the guy next to you hitting everything with 5c shmah lol
  • What's funny is this would be a cool arcade game, like a legit one at like a bowling alley, 4 tokens and ya get say 20 shots
  • Fish hunting is addictive but dont let them fool you. Its a slot. Shoot low and have fun. I noticed that the longer you play the better chance at ANY Payout. So throw your $150 in and play with 10 cent shots. Enjoy the graphics and have a good time.

In Florida our Law states that if it feels like gambling then it is and it is illegal unless ran by authorized entities. However these Arcades are everywhere and are sketchy AF. With these machines are slot machines with multi-line payouts, FBI investigated a robbery at one and they are still open 2 years later. Makes no sense.

I think a lot of people don't understand, because these machines are programmed they can be set up to be basically impossible to win. Even if they look like they're fair, I guarantee they are coded to take money from the players to give to the owners, and not to act as a completely honest game of skill. Something can appear to be very simple and easy to win, but actually be anything but. It's one thing to go and pay just to hang out and have some fun, but I kind of feel bad for people who don't have a lot of money to spare and are being taken advantage of without realizing it's not a level playing field.
  • I had no idea what this was until a random lady came up to me in the walmart parking lot , trying to sell me her food stamps for cash. She said she was addicted to this game and spent her entire paycheck playing this.
