Line twists are a very common opening problem that is most often banal. Nevertheless, knowing how they happen and how to fix them is important to become a safer skydiver.

Also note that even though they are often banal canopy malfunctions, they can still end up in a cutaway.

So in this video, I'll cover how they happen, how to fix them and how to avoid them.

I just had this happen Friday. I'm an AFF student and it was my 6th jump. I instantly remembered my emergency procedures. I was able to pull on my risers and kick out pretty quickly. I was surprised how calm and collected I was.

I had a line twist during my AFF level 1. I did everything I learning at groundschool. Alti-check and kicked it out. Before my first jump, I thought I would totally freak out when this happens, but I was calm and knew immediately what to do (maybe because of the adrenaline). Later on, when I was home I then freaked out XD. But I am still skydiving :D. By the way, I could improve my landing skills thx to this youtube channel. Thank you !!!!
  • I had my first on Saturday morning,......dive #7,....I kept calm and went right into what I was taught,.....kicked out of it and tested the canopy ,.....and let out a yell heard across four counties!!! So thankful for good training and keeping your cool under pressure. I learn from every one of them ,....I hope to make a lot more

I'm on my AFF 7 and I already had 3 line twists :( I need to be more stable on deployments. Hadn't had much trouble with them, twice I kicked out of them, the other one I counter twisted them, where twist moved to risers which rotated me back to normal... I learned all that in this video! Thanks.

This happened in my second tandem today, glad my instructor was prepared lol
  • Another way line twist have an easier opportunity to engage is by tightening your chest strap too tight. This brings the risers closer together and so the lines don't have a far gap between them. I would point out the pulling the risers apart is great to stop the lines from twisting more but it is easier to kick out if the risers are then pushed together. Pulling apart makes the lines tighter in the twist. I'm a big fan of twisting the risers to bring the twist down as you stated. Definitely the most productive method

Had line twists on second AFF jump. Training helped me to address situation immediately. Spinning got worse and canopy started to lay down. Heavy CF started and I was going to cut away! At that time it came free and made a normal landing.

Excellent video I had my second lines last week. I wish I saw this video before.
  • Great video. Great information and entertaining to watch. Thank you, have a great day.

Great tips! On my third jump of the day yesterday, I had a line twist, and tried bringing the risers together while adding the kick in there, and it came untwisted quickly. Thank you!

What an eerie coincidence... I've just had a jump about 2 hours ago with more twists than ever before. I managed to solve the problem exactly at the decision altitude, otherwise it would have been my first cut away.
  • @AlexShaw
So glad you mentioned the 2nd method of pushing together and twisting. I've seen this being done on another YouTube video however my skydiving centre never mention this way. It's one that I will use though if I ever need to.
  • I got a severe line twist and spindle canopy (just like in your video at 2:00) due to a TENSION KNOT that I haven´t noticed on one steering line when I packed my Rig, that´s why it´s so important to check periodically untwisting steering lines from the canopy to the container, fortunately, I opened at 4000 feet so I had enough time for spindle my body til get untwisted my canopy and fix the problem, definitely was a scary experience.

An AAD fire is not a given on spinning line twists because you need to be falling faster than the activation speed. The canopy might be out and you are spinning fast but not that fast. Like I had spinning line twists while wingsuiting, passed out and the AAD didn't fire. I woke up on the ambulance ride and later my alti showed I impacted at ~25mph which is way below AAD firing speed. I don't agree with everything but its nice for newer jumpers especially given the push by USPA to "Don't Delay, Cut Away"

Me looking this up mid air, firstly I had to sit through a 12 second ad... and then you took like 4 min to get to the solution... you know how fast I was falling bru?!
