Raising a Butterfly| Eastern Giant Swallowtail Butterfly

Published 2022-01-16
I noticed a tiny Eastern Giant Swallowtail Caterpillar chowing down on my white sapote seedling in early November 2021. Over the weeks, I watched the caterpillar chow on the citrus-related plant. Then, on Christmas Eve, the caterpillar surprised me with its grand reveal into an adult butterfly!

Of all the critters I’ve had in my greenhouses over the years, the caterpillar will be the most memorable. I hope to raise another caterpillar into a butterfly in the future.

Yes I had the same swallow tail caterpillars and when i first saw them on my citrus I almost went into protect mode. Then I just let nature take her course. They're such beautiful butterfly. They got very I traction with me. Soo awesome to see the growth of your collection.
  • I am surprised it emerged on Christmas Eve. When the GS caterpillars are around in the fall or winter they usually go into their chrysalis and don’t emerge till spring. It’s called “ overwintering”

I really didn't like those guys buy now I appreciate them a little more.
  • Have you ever had trouble with them dying? I had 15 and then they started hanging head down, got mushy and weak and fell off. The only thing i noticed was some of the Wild lime leaves I was feeding them were brown. Don't know if they turned brown from caterpillar vomit or a disease. I have 2 left that are doing OK. I only feed them the tender new shoots now. We'll see ....

    ❤Beautiful 😊 I have 2 on my orange tree
  • One question do you know what leaves they eat? Coz there are like 5 caterpillars on our lemon plant and i think they'll eat it all out if i let em loose but I don't even want them to die so I'll keep em off the and putt a dummy plant inside a box and feed em leaves by myself! So what can i feed em besides the only plant i have?

Do the caterpillars wonder off the trees when changing like Monarchs? I had 3 on my lemon tree that disappeared, and 3 on my orange tree that also disappeared …I have searched the tree limbs and found no trace of any kind of mud hut, for lack of a better description., on any of the trees…
