EMBARRASSING mistakes when speaking DUTCH! #3

"Huurhuis" and "hoerhuis" made my day.

I meant to say "uitslapen" (slept in late) but said "inslapen" (put to sleep like an animal at a shelter) - good times!

My ex girlfriend once walked into the bakery, and asked me if she could get the bread. So I told her what to say "mag ik een gesneden bruin brood" which means "may i have a brown sliced bread". But instead she asked the baker "mag ik een bruin besneden brood" which means "may I have a brown circumsized bread". Needless to say the baker was laughing.

A former colleague once went into a greengrocer to buy a punnet of strawberries, but in stead of saying aardbei she asked for aambeien (haemorrhoids). The grocer could barely stand up he was laughing so much

Once I embarrassed myself by saying “Ik slaap in de badkamer” I said badkamer because phonetically it sounded way too similar to “bed-room” or “bed-kamer”

When that guy started about 'huren' and 'hoeren', I was like: "Not again..." 🤦‍♂️

"Ik woon in een hoerenhuis en de hoer is duur." 😂😂😂

I meant to say " huurcommosie" at the police station ( don't ask. My landlord tried to push me down the stairs) and I said hoercommisie" and the cop slammed the door shut because he thought I was talking about human trafficking.

I also once had an Austrian friend, who was into internet-language and said; 'LUL!' (like LOL) a lot. She went into a Nijntje-shop with childrens-toys, saw a toothbrush and yelled; 'LUL LUL LUL LUL!' I dragged her outside and said; 'Ssssshhtt! What are you doing, not in front of the children! That words means penis!'

One more situation: I was studying architecture and I said that I have a gold stairs 🤦‍♀️ The difference between "g" and "h" was very difficult in Flemish. So I said "goude trap" instead of "hout" 😅 People told me that I need to be very rich person 😂

"huursubsidie" is also a classic dutch trap for foreigners ;) (subsidized rent which often gets pronounced as subsidized hookers)

AFTREKVERSCHIJNSELEN: I wanted to convince someone to have a beer with me. he refused because he had already had many drinks the past weekends at weddings and such. my argument was that he needed to have a beer with me anyway because otherwise he might get withdrawal symptoms. it's "ontwenningsverschijnselen" or "afkickverschijnselen" in Dutch. to draw=to pull= trekken, so instead of afkickverschijnselen I mentioned "aftrekverschijnselen". this literally translates to wanking symptoms. at a physics conference ..

I am Dutch but I've been in Germany and I usually confuse schön and schon. Schon means 'already' and Schön means pretty. I often hastily go; 'Oh oh, yes, already! Already the buildings!' And then later I realize my mistake, on my way home. I also, very often (as I think many other Dutch people do) add the word "hoor" (sounds like 'whore') into English conversations, with surprisingly bad results xD

The dutch are always impressed when you speak the language even if you make a lot of mistakes, its a hard language to learn and most of the time we are happy to help and teach the words

A friend and I had a trip to Netherlands planned for this April (what could possibly go wrong?) We live in the Canary Islands and speak Spanish. At one point I was suggesting as a joke that we could make money on the way around by singing and dancing. But somehow I used the Dutch verb (zingen) and conjugated it as if it was the Spanish verb (cantar). As all the Spanish speakers will know, "zingando" does not mean singing, which explained her husband´s shocked facial expression.

Yeah, i'm not the only one who can't pronounce "ui" i literally had a friend training with me for over an hour and i still just can't do it. I can say "uil" just fine and even as a german i had zero problems with "Scheveningen" buit "ui" that is a whole different story. I kinda sound like i am choking on something and that Is also the look that i get from people: plain and simple worry for my health ... glad i'm not the only one facing this

I told my colleague that I couldn't sleep at night because a men was shining at my window.. Of course I ment a moon.. (maan vs. man) 😂

When our family migrated to australia in 1972 , anyway mum had a few problems with her english , she wanted to buy a bed or something like that, she asked the shopasistant for a ledikant , that did not go over well .
