The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker: A Symphony of Fate

The Star Wars Prequel trilogy tells the tale of Anakin Skywalker: a prophesied prodigy with unparalleled potential. From a slave on Tatooine to a Jedi Knight, his journey is a tumult of triumph and tragedy. Tempted by fear and manipulated by Darth Sidious, his descent into darkness is a cosmic tragedy. His fall is swift and devastating, betraying the Jedi Order and turning against his mentor and brother. Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader is a chilling reminder of darkness that lies within us all.

John Williams captured this tragic tale beautifully in his score to each of the three films. I tried to compile the music in a way in which the story of Anakin with all its ups and downs is at the forefront. The music is divided into different movements designed to capture a specific idea that is relevant to Anakin's story. I hope you enjoy listening!

This final part covers Revenge of the Sith with all its heart-breaking moments. Anakin, who starts out as a hero, falls to the dark side, and emerges on the other side as Darth Vader. His turn leaves the force in darkness and the Sith once more rule the galaxy as the republic is reorganised into the first galactic empire.

More details about the movements:

0:00 Movement VII: The Heroes in Battle
As the war orchestrated by Darth Sidious still engulfs the Republic, we witness Anakin and Obi-Wan, in their prime, fighting for the Republic side by side. Bound by a fraternal bond, Anakin's unwavering loyalty to Obi-Wan and willingness to risk his own life to save that of his master stands in stark contrast to their later duel.

7:05 Movement VIII: Anakin's Betrayal
Anakin's tragic fall orchestrated by Palpatine, and greatly aided by Anakin's fear of losing Padme, shatters the Republic. Seduced by promises of power, he betrays his Jedi brethren leading to the downfall of the Jedi order through Order 66. With the Republic's demise, Palpatine ascends to ultimate power, ensnaring Anakin in a web of darkness, sealing the galaxy's fate in despair.

19:40 Movement IX: Battle of the Heroes
Anakin further embraces the dark side as he turns on his mentor and brother who reluctantly accepts his fate. Anakin goes from doing anything and everything to save Obi-Wan's life to being determined to take it. Betrayal and anguish saturate the air as their brotherhood disintegrates amidst the flames of destiny. Ironically, in the end, it is Anakin who underestimates his master's power…

29:08 Movement X: Anakin's Suffering
Anakin has lost everything at this point, even himself. His body is dismembered forcing him to live the rest of his life enslaved by a suit without which he cannot survive while being forced to serve the architect of his downfall. The very reason he turned to the dark side, to save Padme, turns out to be the very thing that would make him lose her forever. At this point, Anakin, now fully consumed by Vader is too full of anger, hate and pain and fully embraces the dark side as his monstrous actions make it almost impossible to turn back to the light side. All hope seems lost….

  • 37:17 makes me feel some type of way... There our hero is, deformed by hatred, and the only thing he can see as he gazes out at the galaxy from the bridge is death itself. So tragic, and so moving.

This sounds so much like Indiana Jones. I will assume John Williams wrote all these?
