The older guy is representing Joost's late father. It doesn't matter where Joost travels or what he's eating, there will always be the pain of missing his parents. Nobody could help him, not even when he paid them. Children should be happy, enjoy their lives, right? What if you're not happy as a kid? Joost's father died when he was 12 and his mother a year later. With this song he he is taking the step to move on with his life. That's the meaning of the fire. Joost shares his fathers wisdom: people invented borders/ boundaries, so you can invent your own world. Father worked as a volunteer with refugees when he was alive. So the song tells us about the pain of grieving but also contains a hopeful message of Europe being a place of freedom and diversity. We are all human beings. Let's come together. Thank you for your reaction! Greetings from Westland, The Netherlands ❀

The song that makes people happy and makes them feel one in joy and pain If you can not love Joost you are not able to love Because he is funny, talented, intelligent, full of energy, brave, vulnerable, innocent and human but most of all he spreads love and he is grateful What a nice boy! Thank you for sharing your comment Have a nice day πŸ‡³πŸ‡±πŸ’ΆπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘‰πŸ₯‡πŸŽ‚πŸ₯‚πŸΎπŸ‘‘πŸ™

The first time I listened I thought, what in the world is this? Now it's my favorite. I can't get it out of my head. The Netherlands 12 points! ❀

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said β€œI’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art. The lyrics have a lot of layers: Europe let’s come together! It’s now or never! I love you all! Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Visit my friends in France Or take a long walk to Vienna I want to leave the Netherlands But my passport is gone Fortunately don't need a visa To be with you So take the bus to Poland Or the train to Berlin I have no money for Paris So use my imagination Do you have a euro please Say "merci" and "please" I lost everything Except time So am travelling every day For the world is mine Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Ich bin in Deutschland Aber Ich bin so allein Io sono in Italia but still I feel pain Am running from myself Calling for "help!" all day long Yes I even give people money But there is no one to help me I don't need es-car-gots Don't need fish 'n chips Don't need paella, no I don't even really know what that is Turn on the radio I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai" Won't stop until they say "Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!" Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa…. Welcome in Europe boy! At the end of the day We are all human beings My father once told me It's a world without borders I miss you every day Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you
  • @Benfilms
There is an awesome live version of the song on his YouTube channel.
  • @LuckyRMST
The sad outro is a part of its own song, its not featured in the end on the Spotify version of Europapa, so unsure if it will be done live or not... Also very excited to see what the live show will be like!
  • @noah.9047

  • @drAgonheart580
Thank you for taking this emotional rollercoaster. My recap: You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.
  • There is actually a a funny movie made called New Kids. Some of the actors were actually dancing in this clip and the guy on the tv is also from New Kids
  • Thank you so much for doing this reaction! ❀ And we in the Netherlands are also wellknown about that we are truly honest and say what comes in our head/minds. Then now you know even a bit more of how the Dutchies are πŸ˜‰
  • There is an original live performance of the song out. This could help you to choose which song is beter. EnjoyπŸ˜€
