What’s going on is easily a contender for top bassline of all time. Just so good, I get chills every time I hear it.

Northern Exposure still rules. I've watched it in the last few years and it holds up.

Greetings and much love to all my fellow bassists out there!
  • What an outgoing and dedicated musician. Interesting career trajectory and landed the bassist slot in the WHO ?? mind-boggling. Nice fender bass with a great tone right along with my tastes.
  • Well, I was hard core jazz too while everyone the other kids were listening to the Police,The Who, Styx....Had no interest in James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel although now I appreciate more. But I'm not ashamed to say I was a fan of Spyro Gyra although I listening hard core bebop. It was jazz's version of Yacht Rock and those guys like Christopher Cross had guitar chops and writing chops. Spyro Gyra essentially started the "smooth jazz" decades yet, they didn't intend it. They incorporated world rhythms, they were good compositions, everyone in the band had good chops even if no Jaco's came out of the band. Their compositions made it into the real book which not alot of people can claim. IN concert, they performed long form improvisation and everyone was showcased and Jay Beckenstein figured out how to keep the franchise going for 50 years with some good bass players. Scott Pecker played with Stanley Turrentine before joining Spyro Gyra and he seems to have monster chops to me. I think it's more of an issue of peer pressure. It's like saying you grew up listening to Barry Manilow. It's not cool. I will say that David Sanborn's early commercial recordings weren't my sound. Going back and listening to some of Sanborn's recordings, the cat could play.
  • Thank you. When I was young, I had the same references with also Marc King, Stanley Clarke and Francis Rocco Prestia of course!

OMG Northern Exposure yesss!! I finished watching it a few months ago, what a blast! And the theme is sick too

I grew up listening to Motown since my parents always had that kind of music playing when I was a kid. I was immediately drawn to the Motown bass sound, and growing up near the Detroit area helped me appreciate that even more. I didn't realize that all the bass players that I loved idolized the same players. (Jamerson, etc.) The fact that I was a kid and I recognized the importance of a great bass line speaks volumes about the Motown sound.

“Translation: bears”. I snotted my coffee. Great interview guys.

Marcus plays his 77 Fender Jazz on all "The man with the horn"...what a record!! His work as a "sideman" and producer in the 80s was unbelievable! <3

Jamerson is the Roy Hobbs of bass IMO. That book 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' not only featured performances by the folks you named but was hosted by Paul McCartney. I mean if that doesn't give you a clue about the greatness of Jamerson I don't know what will. P.S. Y'all left off a few notable names of folks who performed Jamerson bass lines on the CD's that accompanied the book including Jack Bruce, Will Lee and Willie Weeks.

Imagine if The Who could continue as a legacy band where they just bring in new members to continue the legacy of The Who
  • @albikes8484
I was listening to Van Halen, Plus listening to Stanley Clark , If this bass could only talk. I was fortunate to have a few other musician freinds who understood my musical eclectic-ness.
  • love this do the pod in same room instead of ian coming over and doing video/lessons would be great
  • @ImJwak
