Extreme winds from Hurricane Laura blew from southeast to northwest perpendicular to a rail line near Grand Lake. A train on the track was toppled over and derailed with dozens of train cars pushed over. Drone aerials show the scale of the derailment which was hundreds of yards long.

That was a string of empty covered hopper cars on a storage track. The car owners, usually a holding company, pay the railroad a set amount per day for each car that they have on that track. Usually it is around a dollar per day. Since the track would not otherwise be getting used, this is a way to get revenue from it. Most railroads that have unused spurs or sidings make use of them in this way. The giveaway was the RR crossing at 2:00. The string was separated on either side of the road crossing and back about 200 feet from the road. This is required in the FRA regulations.

I've hauled enough brand new bogeys to know they always look rusty. They don't use them as soon as they make them. They'll sit for a while before they get to use them. If those cars were full, they might not have blown over, also there'd be product on the ground. Gravity does most of the work of keeping the bogeys under the train, but they can detach during derailments. This looks like a holding track for empty or new cars. Don't see any seals on those hopper chutes, so more than likely new empty cars. Also, the track would have been torn up if they were full, then tipped.

    THIS IS TRULY INCREDIBLE FOOTAGE...WOW!...;)
  • if they knew the hurricane was comming why didnt they stall or relocate the trains route?πŸ€”
  • How nature makes such scrap metal out of our proudest accomplishments!
  • Those are brand new cars! Look at the axles, bearings, trucks and dump doors!

Why even analyze what the hurricane did. A high wind will knock an 18 wheeler trailer over.... This is surprising to see a train. Who would have ever thought?

The craziest thing about this is watch how fast everyone rushes back to rebuild at the waters edge...do we ever learn lessons?

Re-railing all those grain cars is gonna take weeks if not longer. Harvest time coming up.

They had to been emptied or they would not have fell over. could the railcars move farther north to avoid the big hit.
  • @julieisthatart
There was this guy who kept telling his girlfriend they would be together until the wheels fell off. Never knew what that meant until saw this...
  • @ThaRealChuckD
Why weren't they disconnected from one another knowing a hurricane was coming?
