It's been a while now since I last played Galactic Civilizations IV, but I'm so glad I jumped back in, because the Supernova Edition which just arrived on Steam, is so much more polished and content-filled than the game was almost two years ago, so if you're brand new or a returning player, there's a lot of new stuff to see here!

My favorite thing about GCIV: Supernova has to be the way the game eases you into its main concepts. This is a game that can demand hours and even days or weeks of gameplay, but in those first few hours, the game does a great job of taking it slow, and of handing you just enough mechanics and gameplay aspects so it doesn't overwhelm you. But when the game opens up further, and you become even more comfortable with its systems and get a feel for how everything works, that's when that sense of "just one more turn" kicks in, especially because turn times in this game are super fast.

Compared to some of the more simulation type sci-fi 4X strategy games out there like Stellaris or Distant Worlds 2 then, Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova comes across as a lot more approachable and seamless, especially because of it's unique and open galaxy and star system feature, even though there is so much more to do and explore here than to look at a pretty campaign map ;)

I bought Galactic Civilisations II 8 years ago and I still haven’t played it. Maybe I should.

I played GC3 a bit. It didn't really take. But I'm willing to see if this vid can make me come back. Civ and Paradox games certainly keep pulling me back in

Great video i havent played this series. but I do have Distant World 2 which i was very hyped for but still need to properly learn/understand it. GC4 is up next though--playing tall sounds really fun!

Thank you for your review of this game.

Jeez, definitely the wrong time to lure me into a devastating black hole, with Christmas knocking at the door and plenty of work to do. I'm one of those who prefer GalCiv over Stellaris & Co and I must say, the newest version looks nice. Will definitely take a deeper look. The AI race generation sounds fun and if the shipbuilding has kept its fascination (even if I don't truly like the more cartoonish style), I'm in. After New Year, when I can put myself into social hibernation for a month or two.
  • I just don't understand why modern sci fi strategy games can't have battles like empire at war and homeworld. surely developers can manage this 20 years later?
  • @chellybub
It kind of reminds me of a more 4X version of Sins of a Solar Empire, especially with the culture stuff :) that was a cool game though more of an RTS.

No Andy, this game has not dethroned Stellaris, because one is a turn based strategy and the other is a real time strategy. The only games that can really compete with Stellaris are: Distant Worlds 2 and, Aurora 4X(a free ULTRA indept ULTRA deep 4X Spreadsheet game😅🤣)

Stellaris was dethroned by Endless Space 2, which was dethroned by Distant Words 2. This looks like a progression from ES2, but doesn't touch the depth of DW2.

Stellaris has been dethroned for a while by Endless Space 2 though
