An animated short documentary about a difficult father-daughter relationship. Drawing on childhood memories, Anne Koizumi, the filmmaker, explores her upbringing with her Japanese immigrant dad, who was also the janitor at the elementary school she attended.
The film explores the idea of shame and how it can shape and define us while also concealing who we can truly become. #CBCShortDocs #InTheShadowOfThePines

Beautiful. My father immigrated from Bangladesh and my mother from Trinidad and Tobago. I'm finally old enough to appreciate their strength.

What a powerful story. My mom immigrated from Mexico and had to endure so many challenges. I would sometimes be embarrassed by my heritage at all white school. But it’s changed so much now. This video sparked a nerve with me. The narrative is to raw and the visuals are so beautiful. What a gem

I can't stop crying watching this. very touching. I hope the girl does not live with the guilt. KIds don't know better.

Some wise guy once said that, "never feel ashamed of your mother's bare feet and your father's empty pocket."

Don't be shamed, and don't live with the shame. Kids are kids, the important part is how do you teach your child. your dad will forgive you after all it is you made him stronger.

Beautiful. My tears do flow. Immigrant parents are amazing.

A beautiful yet sad story.

Beautiful story. Maybe it would delight your dad to see how your perspective has grown, and what you've come to appreciate since you were a kid. Maybe he trusted that you would reach this point, even though it came later in your life. Maybe it gave him joy to see what he was able to give you, because he knew what it was to grow up without it.

damn depressing story, the clay-mation, narration, the music was very well crafted, eerie actually. i feel for the guy who endured the alienation and feeling ghosted, you can imagine how true this is to many people today & yesterday of all creeds of this soil.
