We used to drive 36HP & 40HP Volkswagens, and we still managed to get around. You don't need 400HP all the time.

Scotty: "everything you need to know about 3 cylinder engines..." "They have 3 cylinders" "They're engines"
  • I've been the happy owner of a three cylinder engined, four wheel drive vehicle since the mid-eighties. Top speed is a raging 8 mph, which isn't bad for a Massey-Ferguson 1020 tractor. The engine, if my memory doesn't fail me is a 19 hp diesel. Really enjoy your videos, Scotty.

Scotty, if 7-11's are open 24 hours, why do they have locks on the doors?
  • @fidelcatsro6948
i thought he was going to say " im givin away one of these 3 cylinder cars" at the end of the video
  • @alex.gen222
Hello form Craiova, Romania ! Maybe one of my neighbours assembled that engine.
  • Learnt to drive in a 1.0 3 cylinder Suzuki swift back in the day, loved that thing
  • @alexspectre962
Im glad you don't hate the modern 3-cylinder engines. I was considering a 2019 Ford Fiesta ST.
  • @crosslink1493
Scotty, you forgot about the Chevy Sprint, a 3-cyl compact built for Chevy by Suzuki back in the mid-1980s. A co-worker had one and used it as his daily driver. Worked great for him driving 50-60 miles per day on the Southern California freeways, I don't recall he had any problems with it in the 4 years we worked together. Also, Yamaha made a 3-cyl motorcycle with a 650cc engine back in the early 1980s. I had one and it was my 'daily driver'. Not fast by any measure, but very reliable and very easy to maintain, and no excess vibration from the 3-cyl engine.

Some of these modern 3 cylinder engines are really fun, they have a load of character with the extra noise they generate and they rarely feel too shy power-wise these days when they're put into small hatchbacks. Hard to dislike em.

Back when I was starting out I bought a brand new Metro for the grand sum of $6700.00. Air conditioning, power brakes, and nothing else. It was the hatchback, and I'll never forget my wife and I going on a 3 day 1st anniversary trip to the mountains. Round trip with the AC blowing...$20.00 in gas. 47 mpg and I still came home with nothing but less than a dollar change in my pocket. But hey, young, dumb and great memories. My daughter was born 9 months later! I drove that car for four years, sold it to my dad (he travelled a lot selling insurance) and he drove it for four more years, then sold it to a preacher who drove it a couple years and gave it to a woman who was broke and needed a car. She totaled it, but that 3 cylinder never gave any trouble and I only remember it being a great little motor. We changed the timing belt every 70,000 miles per the manual and it just kept going.

As a Geo enthusiast I appreciate the correct facts on it, most people get the specs and manufactures wrong, thanks for putting out great content.
  • @JDMHaze
HEY SCOTTY Since you brought this up could you speak on a Opposed-Piston engines,, Because a 3CYL Opposed piston engine is supposed to be equivalent to a 6cyl Because it has basically dual pistons in a longer cylinder that is about the size of 2 cylinders I really hope you do because this is something not many people know about
  • @AR-jx6wr
I used to work for Westinghouse Security Systems 30 years ago and our first company vehicles were Geo Metros. We called them the 3 cylinder beer cans of death. You had to get the car up to 80 mph just to be doing 55 mph by the time you got to the top of the IH 45 bridge at Galveston. Thank goodness the next year they were replaced with Ford Rangers.
  • @NemoBlank
I had an 85 Chevy Sprint with a three cylinder. It was a speedy little thing that would jump like a jackrabbit, but it was like maintaining an aircraft with all the parts built right to their lowest weight limits. I started getting blowback at around 60,000, so I sold it but I missed being at the next traffic light before the SUV's around me could lumber across the last intersection.
  • @kieranJo70
3 cylinder engines are very underrated and as a motorcyclists love the character. Thanks Scotty hey insight
  • @c.v.d5880
Hey Scotty I had a new 1986 Suzuki Forsa which was a 3 cylinder engine which was a very fuel efficient and good ride. I drove if for 330,000 miles after 13 years.
  • SAAB 96 2-Stroke . . . great little 3-cylinder engine. 1950's to 1967. Coveted by collectors . . . small enough to keep a spare engine in the trunk.
