Leaked documents reveal a secret $40m deal between former Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich and two men dubbed Vladimir Putin’s “wallets”, a BBC investigation has found.

The billionaire Russian oligarch was sanctioned by the UK and EU council in 2022 for his proximity to the Russian leader and for allegedly profiting from the Kremlin regime.

Mr Abramovich has previously denied any financial relationship with Vladimir Putin, and he has not responded to requests for comment from the BBC.

  • the British government welcomed him with open arms when he bought Chelsea knowing fully that he was Putin's buddy. So why wait 20 years to vilify him?
  • $40 million for Roman and Putin is play money, you should at least make it $400 mil plus. Roman and Putin probably make $40 million a month in interest rates payments.

$40 million is half a player in his former Chelsea.
  • Why question an Oligarch s connection with the government. That is how it works in Russia
  • @anonymousm7184
$40 million is equivalent to a penny to him it cost him that much on fuel for his yacht
  • Amazing how it take authorities years to realise these practices go on when rest of world knows from day one

Maybe you should also investigate all billionaires? Including the ones linked to the British government. Hypocrisy at the highest level here from the UK government and the British media. Infosys springs to mind for starters.

The UK was fine with this until the geopolitical scene changed. This is all two faced posturing.
  • You could of went a lot deeper than you did , hope there a part two to this investigation
  • @jayhoughton4174
I suspect that Putin made Abramovich an offer he couldn’t refuse.
  • Great investigative journalism. Keep following the money. Thank you for your work.
  • Great if BBC could review Ronan Farrow's podcast "catch n' kill". The name Valdugen rings a bell.

Im not doubting Roman may have dodgy aspects to his business dealings. The problem i have with authorities continuing to try and establish a current connection between Roman and Putins inner circle is that at the peace talks. He was poisoned and nearly died. Also after having his assets frozen, he went to Israel not Russia to rebuild himself. Putin definitely saw him as a ally at one point but i dont believe from what has been reported especially since this war and supposed peace talks, Putin counts on Ambramovich as a friend or ally of Russia.

Makes one think Ian Fleming's SPECTRE is not so far-fetched after all...
  • 40mil seems a little low given the industry. Would expect a billion+ deal.
