  • Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees. Probably the most famous last words said of anyone during the civil war.

Stephen Lang is a fantastic actor. He was incredible in this movie and played Pickett very well in Gettysburg aswell.

What’s sad is your watching him have his whole life flash before his eyes.
  • I remember getting a book from my great aunt for my birthday when I was a kid that explained how to be a perfect southern gentleman.. it was written by an author who during the civil war interviewed Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and several other generals.. wish I still had it, it was a very old book.. oh the joys of being born in the Deep South lol
  • People call me the most heartless person in the world but every time I watch this scene in Gods and Generals I literally do everything I can not to cry.
  • I'd hate to be that southern soldier who shot probably one of the best generals the Confederacy ever had
  • The more I learn about him the more I respect him and when I first saw this there were tears. I don't care if I get shit for this the scene, the performance is so well done I actually was trying hard not to cry.

I just visited where he was wounded and where he died for the first time today. On he monument where he was wounded they have his last words inscribed on it, and I couldn't bring myself to read them because I knew it would make me cry, as this scene in the movie gets to me every time.

It's okay he reincarnates as Pickett in the next battle😉

Rest on,general, rest on. My dear friend. May you rest in sweet repose til glory come.

The movie didn't include his actual words before "let us cross over the river" Before saying that, he said "Order A.P. Hill to prepare for action! Pass the infantry to the front rapidly! Tell Major Hawks--" before falling silent. Then he said his famous river crossing line. I find it interesting he mentioned AP Hill before he died, since Lee also mentioned Hill on his deathbed as well.

The turning point of the war was not Gettysburg. It was the death of Stonewall Jackson.

It’s a shame that one of the best and brightest generals in American history was killed by friendly fire!!!
  • I'm sure he would have preferred to die in battle but he was mistaken as a union soldier while returning from scouting the battle grounds.

I believe one reason the South lost was because we lost one of the best!
  • @fallguye6011
They took his left arm, now I've lost my right.

Excuse me, I must go see who's been peeling onions.
