This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Model Citizen". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes of the film.
This video also covers my return to the Autodale universe in general. I've been away from this series for more than a year and its legacy is easily the thing my channel is most known for. This is the short film all of you seemed to want and If I were to return to the series; I was going to do it right. A huge chunk of this video is dedicated to the preparation and research I had to do to get back into the mindset of the universe I created all the way back in late 2016.
Hope you enjoy! ^_^ This particular "making-of" was a blast to make!

It’s clear when the robot tilts his head, he realizes that they nicknamed their handyman Joe

"Their names don't represent the individual, they represent their *gene pool*" This quote, to me, so perfectly sums up the fascinating and horrifying mentality of Autodale.

"This is not Joe" My whole life has been a lie

Honestly I would be sad for the Robinson’s, but knowing that they died completely satisfied with their lives is kinda relieving in a sense.

“NEARLY no one in Autodale wants to revolt” Me: hmmmmmmmmm..... nearly....

11:55 You're laughing. A man has fallen into the hole in AutoDale city and you're laughing.

“By the way, that’s not Joe.” My Brain: “I KNEW IT!!!” My Heart: “..But I didn’t want to believe it...”
  • Honestly… It adds an extra layer of horror to know that the creator of this world sees it all as some kind of twisted joke. It’s bone chilling to Picture him laughing at their short, ignorant, yet blissful lives with no intention of giving an easy happy ending. It kind of makes you think about your own mortality. I love it.

Unpopular opinion, I would like to see a prequel to Autodale that tells how or why the city was founded. I know it's a risky idea. If done badly the world of Autodale could lose all credibility or could ruin what makes it interesting. But if done right, the show could get even more interesting... and maybe even scarier.

Harry Potter fans: I want to go to Hogwarts! Star Wars fans: I want to become a Jedi! Autodale fans: ....nah I’m good

I have a question: if a child shows early signs of not being "pretty" do the parents also get killed because they failed to raise up the ideal child, which is their most important job as citizens? Edit, since this is still an active thread: Autodale is constantly compared to a machine. If a machine misprints every once in a while yes, it can continue to make copies. But sometimes a cog is considered defective and thus is replaced, aka uglies. However, if a family were to create more then one misprint, why would they not be considered defective themselves and replaced early?

For some reason hearing that the handyman wasn't Joe makes me want to cry. That was such a wonderfully perfect detail. Really awesome work on the whole series!
  • I love the fake out of that scene. You think he’s gonna stand up for himself and revolt when he takes off the mask. But the music changes and he thanks joe of all things. It’s an excellent subversion

He is a good example of “you don’t need a ghost or monster to create a horror film”
