Wybie isn't in in the book Coraline, but that doesn't mean we can't analyse his character based on what is seen in the movie.

Wyborn Lovat was a new character that Coraline director Henry Selick added specifically for the movie. He said that he needed someone for Coraline to talk to in the real world. But he and his doppelganger, The Other Wybie, are more than just tools to move the dialogue forward, they are important characters with arcs of their own that contribute to the lore of the Pink Palace Apartments where the story is set.

In this video I'll be exploring the history of Wybie Lovat, the details of his family tree and ancestors, the importance of The Other Wybie and his role in the battle against The Beldam, or The Other Mother. I'll be analysing his character arc as we go along and explaining what he may have gone through when he was off screen.

This will cover the entire known history of Wybie in Coraline from his early family history to the defeat of the Other Mother. Normally in Horror History, I would only use info from the book, but this will be an exception because Wybie isn't in the novella.

"Assuming we both survive." Hits different now that there's a pandemic...

For all the theories that Ms. Lovat needed a sacrifice: Ms. Lovat wasn't trying to sacrifice Coraline to keep Wybie safe. If she wanted to feed the monster that killed her sister she would have rented the place out to families with kids all the time. She wanted to starve the Beldam out. She made sure she couldn't get her hands on any kids and even sealed the main link between worlds, plus she locked the doll away. The reasons why the Jones family got the apartment was because: 1) They "forgot" to mention they had a kid 2) Ms Lovat really needed the money 3) She was sure that the Beldam couldn't do much by now...until the doll went missing 4) She's going senile. She would HATE the Beldam too much to help her in any way.

Ms Lovat and her sisters were twins and the Beldam tried to lure both of them but the other world only appealed to Ms Lovats sister and Ms Lovat saw the other world how it really was. Thats why she looks uncomfortable at the doll in the picture

If Wybie was a actual person. I would be his friend!!, I love his style, love how he’s super passionate about photography.
  • I was wondering if you were going to address him or not, even if he wasn't in the book. I love his character design, he fits into the story well.

I always thought that Wybie's grandma decided to finally allow a child to live at the Pink Palace when she noticed that Wybie was getting to be the right age/level of curiosity to become a target himself, and she was hoping to offer the Other Mother another child as a sacrifice to protect him.

Who else thinks they should make a Coraline 2 but it would be about The grandmas sister and about the other children’s disappearance?
  • @1-worm-1
My theory is: Wybie’s grandmother and great aunt when through the door together because twins are always together especially when there young. They only needed one doll because they look the same and were always together and Wybie’s grandmother was the only one that made it out alive. That’s why Wybie knows about the bottom of the well and how he says if you reach the bottom and look up you can see 1000 stars, his grandmother maybe saw all the stars. Because I think the well is another portal to the other world, like the door.

I can only imagine Wybie wearing a shirt that says "Born 2 shit, forced 2 wipe."
  • Honestly, Wybie may have been an addition to the movie, but clearly he was still well written and fit into the story in a great well.

"we can conclude that he doesn't have friends, other than the cat that is" SAME

YYYYAAAASSSSSS!!! EVEN THOUGH WYBIE ISN'T IN THE BOOK HE'S MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER!!!
  • @shynx5498
I do think that the cat is the most interesting and misterious character in the whole story along side the grandma of Wybie. He knows the most about everything going On in the other world, he tries to help Coraline without a second purpose/reason. How chooses to help and be by Coraline 's side through all the movie. There's a theory of the cat being a previous Child being taken and killed and then coming back and reincarnating into the form of a cat

Why am i in love with this movie? honestly, it's like I'm emotionally attached to Coraline and no one can say otherwise.

"You may have brought me into this world, but I'm going to take myself out." - Other Wybie
  • quick question: am I the only one that wants a sequel movie, but not a sequel book?
  • @tanisha7
The book mentioned that the tunnel to the other world, was a living creature. "Older than the Bedlam herself", if I remember correctly. Genuinely fascinating, not many videos talk about that.
