The Shadow King, directed by Henry Selick for Disney, was never finished. The movie's production was shut down due to creative differences. More than a decade later, however, Henry Selick has revealed some good news that may lead to the stop-motion story's revival!

Henry Selick is the same director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, as well as the recent Wendell & Wild from Netflix. Because he and Disney had already collaborated with Jack Skellington's holiday adventure, they were ready to start up again in The Shadow King. While the movie didn't end up getting finished, there's still room for hope...

  • The reason for its cancellation is because John Lasseter keep meddling in the production and clash with Henry Sellick, despite being impressed by Coraline and Disney cancelled it due to being "too weird".
  • It will be really cool if Disney did more stop motion movies. Stop motion is such a great art form that doesn't get used that much

I haven't heard of The Shadow King before but I adore Selick's movies and I really really hope this project becomes reality. I love that he's getting recognition for Wendell and Wild, he deserves so much more hype, especially given the fact the so many people give Tim Burton credit for NBC
  • Pleasantly surprised to see Selick got the rights back since I’m reminded of a scrapped pilot, called Very Important House which wasn’t picked up and Disney had the full rights to meaning that the creators Jhonen Vasquez (Who made Invader Zim) and Jenny Goldberg (Production designer on Rick and Morty) couldn’t pitch it to another network mainly since it was picked up by Disney TV Animation.
  • To be honest, I instantly pictured Laika, DreamWorks or Netflix as the best companies suited for The Shadow King. They’ve nailed it when it comes to movies but w/the fallout of Netflix, I just don’t see it. I’d be happier if Laika or DreamWorks ended up w/the project. Plus it's been too long since DreamWorks made a stop-motion movie (that being Chicken Run) so I’d love for them to go back to their roots. Let's hope the turnout goes to plan 👍

Wendell and Wild became one of my favorite films throughout this year with most being a bit stale

After watching Wendell and Wild, i can say that I LOVED it; it felt so nostalgic and classic while implimenting that new-age, experimental vibe. It was a great film, with outstanding visuals and characters, just like all other Henry Selick films, as he is undoubtedly an amazing creator. My anticipation for The Shadow King is raging! Please Netflix make it happen!!

It’s nice to see new stop motion animation from Disney! This sounds like great news!
  • I'm not really a fan of SM films, but I have A LOT of respect for the amount of patience and dedication that goes into it. Good for Henry!
  • Hearing about these canned animated projects being revived recently really gives me hope. Like, maybe we will finally get Larrikins, Monkeys of Mumbai, King of the Elves, Gigantic, a finished version of Popeye, or any of those other films that sounded amazing but were canned. Even though two of those are Disney films and they don't normally revive their own cancelled projects, considering Nimona and Shadow King were initially going to be distributed by them, I can totally see another company picking those other two up and giving them a chance to shine.
  • Disney: Oh, I... I thought you were dead. The Shadow King: My death was... greatly exaggerated.
  • For some reason I still want to see this even though I have never heard of this show ever in my entire life
  • The animation style looks great and it sounds like a great premise too. Hopefully someone picks up up and it can be released.

First of all, I’m glad that he got his original property back from the evil corporation known as Disney second of all I hope he does make the shadow king because it would just add to his stop motion movie library
  • I heard about this movie back in like 2016, 2017 from a video listing canceled Disney movies and this one always stood out for me. I wanted to watch it so badly and now I might finally get to.
  • I hope he can get this made with a different studio and that it’s a huge success. Disney needs to feel the pain when it blows up
  • I feel like Netflix would get The Shadow King since Wendell and Wild is on Netflix and it looks like that Henry Selick has a good relationship with Netflix in general and also Wendell and Wild is getting mostly positive reviews online.

Honestly I can’t wait, coralline and TNBC are both masterpieces and this will in no doubt in my mind will be a classic just like the rest!
