"I married her because I loved her." "Well, thanks for letting me think it was for political reasons all these years. I'm sure that didn't screw me up at ALL."
  • wow.. forgive me. . but that was one of the most romantic sayings I've ever heard on star trek...
  • RIP Ben Cross. This line "I married her because I loved her" really stuck out at me! I felt that one right away!
  • The Sarek from the original timeline also married Amanda because he loved her.  It was revealed in the episode of Star Trek: TNG when Sarek visits the Enterprise-D and he mind-melds with Picard to get his emotional control back.  Sarek, through Picard, confesses his love for Amanda and Spock and his regret that he couldn't show it.
  • Just saw this pop up. Diane Duane explored the relationship between Sarek and Amanda in her wonderful book, "Vulcan". Apparently Amanda worked on the universal translator for Vulcan, and apparently she could make Sarek laugh so hard she thought he was having a heart attack and tried to do CPR, on the wrong location.

Spock derides himself because of his emotions- when his father (a full Vulcan, not half like Spock) admits to loving his mother, that releases his soul- he no longer feels his emotions are a bad thing, he still struggles to control them, but he doesn't try to destroy them.

You cut the second scene too soon. After seeying that, Sarek and Amanda smile at each other and share and tender vulcan kiss. I see no contradiction there.

Leonard Nimoy said when he saw the Uhura/Spock scenes, he was amazed by the relationship and it "worked brilliantly" in his opinion.

In the movie, when Spock was little, his father said it seemed logical but when Spock was emotionally compromised his father told him the real reason why.

Vulcans feel so strongly that they had to either supresses it with logic or kill thenselves in numerous and violent wars. Surak taugh them how to control their overwellming emotions so that they could survive thenselves. Even cold logic could not win against Sarek's love for Amanda....so it was logical to simply accept it and marry her...

The simple way Sarek says it-so matter of fact, as if it was something he never thought he needed to explain because to him it was so obvious that it never occurred to him that he’d have to say why. There is something in that we married people should try for- that the love we feel for our spouse is so strong that we think anyone could see it

That's the thing to understand about Vulcans - they have great affection and respect for humanity but also resent them in a way because humans can bring themselves under control without the steely bounds of logic. Humans are not as strong in any way as Vulcans, but that includes in the extremes of their emotions, meaning they are capable of calming down far more easily, and can simply enjoy their emotions without being overwhelmed by them. They treat mankind as if they were a younger sibling

Sarek uses the line from the show early in the movie as well.

Sarek used the typical Vulcan lie of omission on young Spock in the hope it would nudge him towards being more controlled and thus less of a target. The omission part being, of course, that it was logical to do, seeing as he loved her.
  • @mieroth
No. He's simply emotionally compromised. He just lost his wife along with his entire planet. Vulcans do have feelings in canon - they just suppress them. I thought this scene was very fitting considering what just happened.

You cut out the best part. The 'finger kiss' between Sarek and his wife at the end.
  • @ChlarkNadia
Man, you should have included the whole TOS scene! That one is just adorable, it shows how vulcans can be funny and how they tease Amanda, it's so cute.

Sarek is one of my favorite star trek characters and I'm glad how they handled him in the reboot still very much the same character as he was in the original rip Ben Cross and Mark Lenard
