Russian military doctrine has Always been comfortable taking losses that would make other militaries stop and reassess what they're doing wrong. The idea of Cannon fodder is very real. They will throw assault after assault onto an objective, as in the past that has always worked. This conflict is different in that Ukraine is getting massive amounts of support, something Russia hasn't had to deal with before.

If I remember correctly Putin officially took control of his armed forces in the hope he can steer them in the right direction. If that's true, he's in a bit of a predicament as historically whenever a Russian leader has done this, and the military campaign failed, in short order that leader was given the Russian retirement option.
