Thanks for the advice, I'm just under a year at my current department; and considering applying for a few lateral positions in my area. I didn't have a good FTO but I was able to find other officers who offered more beneficial knowledge. If I can share any information regarding FTO phase 1. Be adaptable 2. Don't complain 3. Humble yourself 4. Gain every bit of knowledge possible
  • Came here because I'm about to get my first trainee. This is good for us and our new guys. Thank you.

Thanks for this. I was in the Sheriff's Office for 15 years working the jails and court. I was also on the Swat team for 9 years but I had no patrol experience. So far I'm two months into my fto training and my evaluations have been good. I'm just still stressed about the whole thing. I just want to get through this.

  • Awesome man, I'm graduating this week and feeling those nerves building up for FTO. I'm excited to get out there but damn there's a lot to know
  • @09zdang
currently in phase 2 and is trying to get out of the negative self talk. Your video helped tremendously. Thank you.
  • Thank you brother. I needed to hear this. Prepping now..... and could you please do a video on each phase of the hiring process?

Thank you for the advice. I have been extended a few times. I know I can do the job but suffer from stage fright, with my trainer, and worry I will do the wrong thing. I am getting better. My next few days are crucial as they will not extend me again. It took me all of Phase 2 to learn they weren't going to teach me how to do the job, I had to learn through failure. I have never had to learn this way so it has been a challenge. My strenghts are de-escalation, talking to people, report writing. My weaknesses are not feeling "competent." I am confident but not competent because they really are not teaching me, rather expect me to figure it out on my own, fail, and then learn the correct way. As much as I hate to admit it this process does work but the mental toll is the stress is at times numbing.

I retired in ‘97 as a captain/patrol division commander after 30 years. The two assignments I enjoyed the most was being an FTO and later, a detective in our Robbery Squad. It was a great career, no regrets, and I still have lunch each week w/my retired buddies. One of them was my FTO and another my supervisor both in patrol & later in the Investigation Division (detectives).
