When you think about this question, you probably think about Texas or California first, both of which often talk about the idea of leaving the Union whenever someone they didn't vote for is sitting in the White House. However, I want to bring a different state into the picture, Hawaii, and here's why.

Hawaii was once a kingdom until the US overthrew the queen and annexed the land in 1898. Since the 1960s, Hawaii has had a relatively strong independence movement, advocating for self-governance and self-determination. But, as you probably know, according to the Constitution, states can never leave the Union.

However, Hawaii could argue that since the US illegally overthrew the queen, which they admitted in the Apology Resolution of 1993, Hawaiians never had the option to choose whether they wanted to be part of the US or not. Whether this would actually hold up and whether Hawaiian independence would even benefit them is, of course, another question.

Therefore, a secession of any state from the Union is highly unlikely in the near future.

While the US won’t let any state leave, they definitely will not let Hawai’i leave
  • As a person who lives in Hawaii, I can confidently say we would die in about three days just due to gas prices 💀
  • Everybody Gangsta until Alaska leaves the US and Putin decides to perform a "referendum"

I'm Hawaiian and I've heard my fair share about Hawaiian independence. But I don't think it's a good idea nor possible. It has to much strategic value that if we did get independence some else would definitely want it. And unless we keep all the military equipment after we leave (unlikely) it would be extremely hard to defend the islands.

Hawaii: becomes independent for 0.00000001 seconds Russia: “Mine.”
  • Hawaii is a strategically important position for warfare, the US would never allow it to leave
  • I know Puerto Rico isn't a state but that definitely has higher odds of leaving then any state in the US
  • While Hawaii is probably the most likely state to actually leave, I’m gonna put the chances of that happening at about 1%
  • Funny how Alaska ain't attached to America yet is probably the most patriotic of all the states

You must understand the demographic of the native Hawaiins compared to Hawaiins who grew up in Hawaii who appreciate being American. Most politicians of Hawaii are not native Hawaiins.

Always thought it was funny how Hawaii despite never being a U.K. colony has a Union Jack on it whilst also being a U.S. state.
