This tune needs no introduction. It gets played in pubs up and down this land every Friday night by loads of bands. I must have played it myself hundreds of times at gigs.

The tune originates from an early traditional melody and the words are attributed to Cathal McGarvey [1866-1927], although some on mudcat are uncertain if he is the true author. Likewise the tune has been around for many years and used for other songs as well, so an interesting heritage to this melody indeed.

    I cant believe it, you have made it sound Appalachian, I can almost imagine the Scots Irish settlers in that area of America playing something similar.

    I've sung this tune for years - in 3/4 and in 4/4. I've probably heard a dozen recordings. But I have NEVER heard it like this - with an Appalachian twang. This is wonderful! You Americanized it!
