15 Homeschool Read Aloud Books for the Early Elementary Years

Published 2021-10-14
My homeschool teens and I compiled a list of our favorite 15 read aloud books for the early elementary years. I know how overwhelming online book lists can be and hope this gives you a place to start. There is also a bonus resource included that helped me when I was homeschooling my elementary age children.

These choices were fantastic! Thanks for sharing. I also have a little channel mainly about homeschooling and so fun to follow along with likeminded homeschool moms.

I was in that time period and we watched little house - it wasn't my favorite but I liked laura - couldn't stand nellie or mary LOL! of the books Big woods and Plum Creek are my most read faves! she's so descriptive!

Thank you for all these suggestions! I grew up in the 70s as well and Little House was my favorite show.
  • Great suggestions! I grew up in the 90s but watched all those old shows - Little House on the Praire, the Waltons, I Love Lucy, and all those other good ones!
  • I didn’t like the Little House on the Prarie show because I had read and adored the books and I felt like it wasn’t even close to the story that I cherished.

Thank you for this! This was exactly what I was looking for!

Remember Lassie when we were young? I thought of that when you mentioned Shilo.
  • This was a good list of a few reviews. We have most of those as well. All titles you mentioned are fabulous!
  • Yes I guessed. Narnia should be read in published date FIRST then a second time through it is ok to read it chronologically , but first it should be read chronologically! We have read it through twice with my oldest and she is only 8. And she loves it!

YES! I watched Little house on the Prairie when I was young too! I loved it! Especially when Laura or Mary put Nellie in her place. Lol!!
  • C.S. Lewis! I like reading it publisher order. The magician’s nephew isn’t quite as engaging and exciting as The Lion the witch and the wardrobe. If you love the series, you will enjoy the magician’s nephew. If you’re not already hooked on the series, it’s not as attention grabbing.

I read the Lion, witch and the wardrobe first and then read the Magician's nephew. I would have perfered to read Magician's nephew first because it explains where the lamp post came from.

Please share your upper elementary book list also. Thanks
  • Interesting fact, recent copies of CS Lewis LWW series renumber the books so that Magician’s Nephew is the first book numerically. I actually read most of the books out of order as a student until I was older (high school) and read the complete series. I really enjoyed Magician, but maybe because I understood who the witch would become and was intrigued to see her origins. The Final Battle gave me chills.
