August 1962 - Playtown Park, Springfield Township, Delaware County

I don't know much about Playtown Park but my dad shot this in 1962 before I was even born. It looks like a fun place.

Thanks for posting this! When I was little I used to beg my parents to take us there when we drove out to Collingdale to visit my grandparents. I think I remember the track with the cars on it but otherwise my only real memory is seeing Sally Starr in person at the park.
  • Oh, many good memories there. I grew up in Springfield roughly 4 1/2 blocks from Playtown Park, walking distance. We'd go there as a family outing in the summer during the 1950's. I hadn't realized it was still there in 1962 - I guess I was too "sophisticated" for it by then as that was the year I graduated from high school. Thanks for posting.

I grew up in Clifton Heights. I remember they had some coin-operated thing where a chicken would come out behind glass and do a trick. Loved this place.

My sister and I grew up a few miles away in Collingdale. Very fond memories of the times we would get to go. We loved Playtown and were very sad to see it go.

OMg I loved Playtown Park. What great childhood memories. By today's standard, the park was nothing more than a collection of cheap carnival rides. My, have we changed.
  • Parents took me and my older sister there in mid 60s. It was always fun but a little bit seedy at the same time, as I recall.

I remember the miniature golf course at the front entrance the ferris wheel and the big tall statue of the guy in the front. I was just a little kid when I went here and loved this place. I also remember that after the park closed that the golf course and ferris wheel were still open for one last season. It was such a treat to go there for the day.

There was a kids amusement Park on Queens Boulevard in Rego Park before Macy's Department Stor complex was built in the 1960s. I have photos in my bedroom in a plastic bag. Today in NYC, there is only one in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

I was only 4 in August of '62. My parents used to take me there when I was a kid. Those kids in that are probably all their 50's today.

I have great memories of this place. We hung out at the arcade, playing pinball. My brother, Chris was good friends with Ken Wareham, who commented on this video a few months back. Does anyone else remember when local celebrity Sally Star made a personal appearance there?
