2024 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid 470 HP | Mobility Insider’s full review

Published 2024-02-12
In January 2024 I tested the updated Cayenne e-hybrid with 470 HP. In spite of a lot of criticism in the early days, the Cayenne is now Porsche’s best-selling model – who would have thought? Back in 2002, Porsche, the ultimate sports car brand, defied convention by entering the SUV market with the launch of the Cayenne and it quickly gained traction, marking a pivotal moment for the brand.

The first generation (2002-2010), developed in collaboration with Volkswagen, showcased a back then unseen blend of performance and practicality. It was an SUV for the racetrack and one for the offroad adventure as well.

With the introduction of the second generation (2011-2017), Porsche refined the Cayenne's design and incorporated advanced technology, contributing to sustained sales success. High-performance variants like the GTS and Turbo S further solidified Cayenne's position as a powerful and versatile luxury SUV. I’ve owned Cayenne from both the 1st and the 2nd generation – first the excellent V8 S, then the unbelievably efficient V6 diesel and then the, well, less efficient, but very powerful, Turbo S.
The third generation (2018-present) brought a comprehensive redesign, emphasizing modernization and plug-in hybrids and addition of the Coupe version next to the standard SUV. Sales have continued to grow, and with the integration of E-Hybrid models, appealing to eco-conscious consumers, new segments were opened up.

One the best cars I ever owned was a Cayenne Turbo S e-hybrid coupe from 2020.

The Cayenne is still hugely popular all over the world and Porsche shifted 1.5 million of them over the last 22 years!

In the luxury segment, first impressions matter, and the 2024 Cayenne E-Hybrid doesn't disappoint. The exterior design is a perfect blend of elegance and sportiness.

The iconic Porsche silhouette is enhanced with subtle, yet distinctive, features, including a redesigned front grille, new LED headlights with the optional HD LED lights (with 32000 pixels in each lamp which can light up the road as far as 600 meters). Other details are the sports exhaust with a deeper sound and rear-wheel steering, which both gives the car more agility on the road and a much smaller turning circle.

The Cayenne is a semi-large SUV, “just” 493cm long and 219.4 cm wide and 169.6 cm tall. Big, but not enormous. It weighs a solid 2500 kg and yet it is very agile. The base sticker price is 119,300 CHF without options. With the typical options we get to 163,350 CHF for this car.

The new Cayenne is offered with five different powertrains: A V6 and a V8 pure petrol engine and three plug-in hybrids combined with V6 or V8 petrol engines.

The lead in V6 has 353 HP and the top 4.0 l Turbo S e-hybrid has 739 HP.
This vehicle has a combination of a 2995 cc turbocharged V6 petrol engine with 304 HP plus an electric motor with 176 HP, in total a combined output of 470 HP and 650 Nm which are transferred to the road via an 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox, delivering sports car levels of performance. 0-100 km/h in just 4.9s and a top speed of 254 km/h speak volumes. You can drive pure electrically up to 135 km/h.

The result? A very smooth driving experience that's also relatively environmentally conscious.

In terms of how it drives, the Cayenne is simply the benchmark among the SUVs.

I was always a big fan of the Porsche Cayenne and have owned a few, and the new 2024 model does not disappoint. It is very stylish, great to drive, it is fast and yet spacious, and it delivers the speed with ease and with a reasonable fuel economy.

Thank you for a first class review of the Cayenne e hybrid, one of the best I have viewed during the last few months. Well done !
  • Superb review! I ordered an almost fully specced Cayenne Coupe e-hybrid in September last year here in Croatia, and it should be delivered in May this year. The decision was between RR Sport (hybrid) and Cayenne. First, I drove the RR, and I have to say that's the vehicle where you feel like the king of the road when you are driving. The seating position is high, the ride is very smooth, and it's quiet and relaxing, but it is still a heavy, bulky SUV, even if you put it in dynamic mode. Then I test-drove the 2024 Cayenne e-hybrid, and from the moment I sat in, I knew it would be my next car. I agree with everything you said in the review. The car weighs 2.5 tons, but you don't feel that weight at all. It's smooth and relaxing when you drive it in normal mode, and it turns almost into a 911 when you put it into Sport Plus. The sports exhaust is a must-have option. I also agree that electric power is there not as a "secondary" drivetrain but as a support to improve the main engine's performance. I drove it very aggressively for 2-hour test drive, 90% of the time in Sport Plus mode, and the consumption was 14l/100 km, which is fantastic. Driving it normally, you can probably expect <8l/100km.

Thanks for this great and honest review! Quick question if you ever see this; would you go for the same car without the air suspensions and rear stearing? or do you believe those are "must have" ?

Hello can you give me an advice. I am looking to buy a coupe and I don’t know should I take 21 or 22 inch wheels since I want more comfort, also would you recommend 14 way seats or 18 way seats? I usually drive 10 hours trip so seats are of big importance for me. Thank you

Thank you for your straight review to the Porsche PHEV. It is in the same class like my RRS P550e. You allready tested the RR P510e. Whats your opinion about these two cars? With the Cayenne you can go to beat the Nordschleife. With the Range Rover you will fly over the gravel roads in Maroc?

Gutes Video! Haben Sie auch vor den Macan 4 (oder Macan 4 Turbo) zu bewerten? Das wäre sicherlich interessant, ist ja eine ganz neue Generation. Liebe Grüße!

Bit strange that such a expensive car doesn’t even have electrically moving rear seats or am I wrong? Would you prefer this Cayenne or the RR p510e?

Your claim (3:05) that Porsche didn't design this vehicle for electric-only driving is plain false. Oliver Blume himself stated that they were increasing the battery size because he knew from e-hybrid owners that they want to do most or all of their local commuting in electric-only mode. Using the electric traction battery as a boost to the ICE is secondary*, not *primary as you suggest here. Yes, a decade ago, Porsche introduced e-hybrids more to have that electrical boost (as with the 918 Spyder but also in the Panamera S E-Hybrid), but people buy PHEVs because they want to drive a LOT in all-electric mode. When you say you only get 40 km of all-electric range in the winter, you don't say how fast you're driving -- it makes a big difference; Kyle Conner did a range test and got 45 miles = 72 km in real-world non-highway-speed driving "around town", driving < 72 km/hr. From my experience, winter range in a PHEV doesn't drop by 45% (it drops more like 10-20%, especially if housed in a garage, and it's speed that's the bigger factor).

Good review. I think the Cayenne has grown from the ugly duckling to quite a handsome car
