56k modem dial-in server

The modem is connected to an openSUSE Linux machine that acts as a dial-in server. I use an old laptop for calling the machine. Both systems are connected via an old telephone system but it would work exactly the same way over a public telephone line (just use a real phone number instead of the internal one).

    It's a v.34 exchange, with speed up to 33.6kbps. You can recognise it by the absence of the DIL tone after the scrambled data exchange. Nice setup ;)

    Those were the times. The times where it took 3 minutes to download a 1 MB image.

    People should acquire dial up equipment and get used to this again. Especially BBS. Keep your phone lines copper as well.

    Das war, wenn ich mich recht entsinne der Sound der 90er. Ich kann mich aber auch noch an die 80er mit Akustik Koppler mit 300 Baud erinnern. Das war in meiner Schulzeit immer mein Traum - meine Eltern wären an den Telefonkosten verarmt :-). Damals wurde das als DFÜ (Datenfernübertragung) bezeichnet und Internet war was militärisches.

    Ach ja Erinnerungen :) 1996 da gings los ELSA Microlink 56K Basic... Na wer konnte noch am Geflöte hören welche Geschwindigkeit am Ende raus kam ???

    A.. partir del segundo 42 , ese sonidiiito era peculiar cuando entraba la conexion a internet, solo desde alli me agradaría tener ese sonido

    U still can use dial up by bluetooth on ur phone... it connects around 56k. Am not talking about tethering...

    Aww, Erinnerungen... weiß noch wie ich mit meinem zusammengespartem Taschengeld mein erstes Modem gekauft hatte. Zum Glück war meine Mutter schnell "angefixt", so dass Sie die Einwahlkosten übernommen hat. :)

    Habe so etwas ebenfalls gebaut. Als "Telefonleitungssimulator" dient eine Fritz Box 7112, als Einwahlserver ein Raspberry Pi. Ich kann entweder direkt über Putty mich wie du auf dem Pi einloggen oder alternativ eine DFÜ Verbindung (PPP) aufbauen. So kann ich mit superschnellen 33 Kbit surfen ;) (Sogar unter Windows 10 geht das noch.. mehr oder weniger). Ich habe auch mal testweise die Verbindung über meinen VoIP-Server laufen lassen (Sprich: Modem am PC -> FritzBox -> VoIP Server -> Fritz Box -> Modem am PI) . Es geht schon, wenn man die Geschwindigkeit am besten vorher fest einstellt (besser nicht mehr als 9600) und es scheint auch besser mit älteren Modems zu klappen als mit 56k'lern .
