I grew up in a household where mom and dad played mostly Count Basie records. What a blessing! A lot of the youngsters in the hood nowadays never even heard of Count Basie. They call this kind of music old. Ain't nothing old about this music. It's still here and it sounds better than ever and it'll be here forever.
  • Freddie green was my uncle. I remember the days when we would go to his house for family gatherings, and he would play for us until the wee hours of the morning. He loved his work. And we loved him. Thank you uncle freddie for all the wonderful memories ❤♥💖

This is 50 years ago. 1972 -2022. The life span in 1972 was 71.5 years. It is sad to say that most of these talented people are gone. This is their legacy to us all. God bless them. And thank you Nick for saving this forever.
  • I adore this beautiful genius of a man! God bless you, Count! Thanks for all the great music!

For my 16th birthday, I asked my parents tp take me to see Duke Ellington and his band who were appearing here in Tucson. Watching this video brings back memories of that night. Same vibe, talent, musicality and big band energy. Duke and Count were music royalty!

That was excellent. That was precious. Oh if the world could just stop fighting and listen to Count Basie.

Takes me back when I was only 42. Still great to hear this music. What memories.

Basie is 68 years old here. If you want the synapses in your brain to start firing, play Basie!

Basie was so masterfully low key, quietly in charge of every note played by the band. You can just feel how much he loved the music and his players.

I saw the Count & his band (for the 1st time!) a few years after this video, a lot of the songs and band members were in the same lineup, so this brings back a lot of memories. Such a great band! I love this!

First off, as of November 8, 2020, ONLY 3.7K people have viewed this recording. I'm surprised only this many people have watched this. Secondly, 157 people disliked this video. Why? They must be ignorant of what good music really is. I think this recording is GOLD. Back in 1982 I went into the city (Chicago) with my camera to do some street photography. In my early twenties I didn't really know the city too much. However, I started in the near north side and worked my way south. Just as the sun was setting I wandered into Grant Park where the bandstand used to be. Chairs were set up for a show that evening. I had no clue who would be playing so I set myself in the front row (Remember those days?) and waited. And what do you know The Count Basie Orchestra opened up the show! It was The Chicago Jazz Fest that I stumbled upon. Who knew? I was aware of Basie's band, in fact I enjoyed jazz even in my pre-teen years. The Basie band played exceptionally well that evening and at one point Ella Fitzgerald came out to sing. I was stunned. She had a wonderful voice. Then ... Joe Williams came out to sing. I wasn't as familiar with Williams, however, the duet he did with Ella and then his performing solo with the band, again, just knocked me off my feet! Then a younger gentleman walked onto the stage to sing along side Williams. For the life of me I don't remember his name. In the middle of all this I was allowed to approach the stage to take photographs along with the many others doing the same thing. Those days are long gone! This show was the perfect end to my day... AND it was free!

Fantastic, what a band, what a big, big, Big Big, BIG BAND!!!!
  • @wikstrom777
His whole persona is "cool" which transfers to his big band! I wish I were born 20 years earlier so I could've experienced many of the Count Basie Big Band concerts. With Mr. Basie tickling the ivory it was always "less is more"! Furthermore, his collaborations with Frank Sinatra are truly a treat and a national treasure. R.I.P. Mr. Bill Basie!

Freddie Green, Eddie Davis, Al Grey..... Wow! Saw the Count Basie Band in the eighties under the leadership of Frank Foster w/ Nancy Wilson.... Hot Man!
