This song was from their second album, 'At the Sound of the Bell'. I loved this album when it came out, particularly the extraordinary and distinctive vocals of lead singer David Surkamp, although some prefer their first album, Pampered Menial with the knockout track, 'Julia'.

Pavlov's Dog is a 1970s progressive rock/AOR band formed in St. Louis in 1972. Pavlov's Dog originally comprised David Surkamp (vocals), Steve Scorfina (lead guitar), Mike Safron (drums), Rick Stockton (Fender bass), David Hamilton (keyboards), Doug Rayburn (mellotron, bass and percussion), and Siegfried Carver (violin). On their second album At the Sound of the Bell (1976), Tom Nickeson was added to the line-up on guitar and he took over Hamilton's keyboard position after the album had been recorded as Hamilton left the band. Safron was still a member of the band but did not appear on the second album, former Yes drummer Bill Bruford played as a guest musician. Safron left in the aftermath of this, partially due to his failure to receive a promised credit on the album sleeve.

In addition to the personnel changes noted above, a raft of guest artists contributed to the album including jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker and Roxy Music's Andy MacKay. (Adapted from Wikipedia). Some say Carver left after the first album and some say after the second, but in any case he was not listed on the 'At The Sound of the Bell' album.

UPDATE: Bassist Rick Stockton commented on this video and provided some background on Valkerie's recording: "The rhythm track was recorded at the Record Plant, NYC, consisting of myself, David Hamilton, Steve Scorfina and Bill Bruford.Bruford was the most consistent, concise percussionist I had ever worked with. No joke, but probably understated comment. Hamilton was the leader and Scorfina and I just held on for dear life. LOL ". He also confirmed that it is Andy MacKay on sax at the end. Thanks for the info Rick.

I have done a slideshow video for this track as there is no video of the band in their heyday. Comments and ratings are invited.

You're welcome, Wilson! The rhythm track was recorded at the Record Plant, NYC, consisting of myself, David Hamilton, Steve Scorfina and Bill Bruford.Bruford was the most consistent, concise percussionist I had ever worked with. No joke, but probably understated comment. Hamilton was the leader and Scorfina and I just held on for dear life. LOL

Heard Pavlov's dog first time in 1976, I was 16 at the time and in hospital in Townsville Australia and one of the nurses gave me the Pampered Menial cassette to listen to so as to pass away the time. Fell in love with the music and the nurse who I married 5 years later. Ah bring back the good old days!!!

Good morning fellows. Today is the 10th of June 2024. I used to listen this song every morning back in early 1980's. ❤

Bring the fucking old days back
  • Almost 70 years old now been listening for over 40 years. It's insane how wonderfully this music blends together, the melodies, the instruments, the lyrics all merging to perfection under the umbrella of that magnificently unique voice. I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd, Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Family but this band ranks alongside them with it's genial originality.

  • I’m from St Louis , hung out in North County where they are from. Remember them playing on the Admiral on the Mississippi River in 1977 if my memory serves me . Always loved David Surkamp’s voice!

Thanks K-SHE 95 in St. Louis for believing in Pavlov’s Dog. Without your foresight, their chances would have been very slim. 71 in a month and a big ‘thank you’ to ALL at K-SHE for all your hard work. Jim in Columbia, MO.✨😉🌙
  • Still genius after all these years... "bring back the good old days" Oh, if we only could! Especially now in 2020.
  • The one and only time I saw them, they opened for Supertramp at the Beacon. The were awesome. The set ended with this morphing into Of Once and future Heroes and they were incredible. Julia was awesome. Hurrah.
  • If there were justice in the world, this band would be in the Rock n Roll Hall of fame, if for no other reason than their inimitable contribution to rock music.

David Surkamp and Getty Lee's vocal styles where both unusual from the norm. But so was their music. Unique and distinct.

I thank you, Wilson, for the respect you have expressed to me and my band. It's definitely my pleasure. I will make sure all my other band mates see this. It will certainly be appreciated.
