Italy's Last Queen: Marie-José of Belgium

Published 2024-07-28
Born as Marie-José of Belgium in 1906, the young Princess would one day become Queen of Italy. Known as the May Queen she would only hold that position for 35 days. During the darkest days of the second World War Marie-José stepped up for her home country of Belgium and personally pleaded with Hitler for better treatment. She took matters into her own hand and almost single handedly tried to negotiate a peace treaty with the US before being banned away to an isolated village. Having lived nearly 60 years in exile, Italy’s last Queen died in 2001 at the age of 94. This is the fascinating life of Marie-José of Belgium.
