I live in Lafayette. Our home is 20 years old and still on the original AC and furnace. And of course with this latest stretch cold weather our furnace died. It is now limping along but needs to be replaced and likely the same for AC. Thinking now is the time for considering a heat pump. Our home is about 3.2k sq ft and we do have a solar system but that solar system does not offset 100% of our electrical bill. Thoughts? Note: we did install a heat pump (blueridge) for a second zone we added for our third floor last year. Seems to work well for cooling and is keeping our 3rd floor heated when rest of house isn’t because of struggling furnace.

I just got a estimate for a heat pump in California and it appears they do require people to use the high efficiency pumps to get rebate money, so it sounds like at least that aspect was thought out. Considering what sparked my looking into this a $9000 repair bill to get my current central AC system operational again, heat pump is looking logical. Especially since the systems can be installed soon and parts for the repair of the current system is estimated at six weeks. Nothing like the more expensive option being easily available versus the cheaper option taking a longtime to get.

We live in the Florida panhandle (Pensacola) where winter nags average between 30-40 degrees. Summer as can average in the mid 90s. What brand heat pump would be a good choice for us? Currently have a 14 year old Goodman 3.5 ton single stage HP. Home sq ft around 2200.

Can you talk about lifespan of a heat pump? Being on all year long wouldn’t this wear out the unit faster?
  • HI WE ARE THINKING ABOUT INSTALLING A DUCTED HEAT SYSTEM WE GOING AWAY FOR THE WINTER FOR 4 MONTHS OKAY TO SHUTTING DOWN WILL AFFECT THE SYSTEM ?
  • And yes Heat pumps good for Tennessee south. Illinois north forget it.
  • The government is shyt today. Get out of our lives. I will not buy anymore Heat pumps. I’ll buy a Seer 16 central AC and gas furnace. I will not lose money. Heat pumps are expensive and they don’t last but 10 years these days. Maybe 15. A good AC will last 20 or more if maintenance is done which is minimal. Same with a gas furnace.
