Low VIX: Warning Sign for Bear Market?

Published 2024-03-29
March 29th, Your Daily Five host Tom Bowley takes a look at some of the action and gets an idea of where the market may be headed in the second quarter. Most people think that when the VIX is low, that's bad for the market, and when the VIX is high, that's good for the market. Let Tom show you something that might dissuade you from that way of thinking.

Informative video Tom. A nice way of succinctly remembering high VIX versus low VIX buy/sell signal, is that old ditty that runs: When the the VIX is high it's time to buy but when the VIX is low it's time to go slow :) I've been looking at the VIX this Easter and picking out the lows of only the worst crashes which were just a little further lower than currently roundabout the 10 maybe 9 area to today's 13 area and it's the time the VIX spends descending to those low level and the next crash after reaching that10/9 area seems to be over a couple of years. So I reckon another maybe 2 years at most before the VIX commences that travel up into crash territory.

My amateur research has shown a $VIX rise above 38 sets an alert to buy when it then declines to below 38. Weekly will reduce whip saws. Love your view of the markets and charts. Thanks, Tom.

I too watch the $VIX closely, but haven't really worked out how to use it. Around 8:20 into the vid you said anytime the VIX goes above 20 you get out of the market. Do you actually sell and go to cash? What else are you considering for information at these times, as I am doubting you would sell on $VIX alone. $VIX can go above and below to frequently to trade on daily for many of us.

GREAT INFO!, thanks for the vix stats. I have been hearing a guy on TFNN saying when you have Big volume with a high VIX thats the sign of a bottom! and thats the time to go long big time! LOL!

Yesterday's close of the QQQ seems very wonky to me, massive 4 million share sell-off. I'm thinking it wasn't us retail pukes that got together and said let's sell 😅 I watched Powell live today and he said they had the numbers yesterday. I'm wondering if other insiders, big institutions, got wind and decided to sell? It takes big players to move 4 million shares in ten minutes 😮

Good stuff Tom. 😊 What do you think about today's PCE numbers 0.8 ? 😮
