In Canada the mid sized truck King for more than a decade has been the Toyota Tacoma. Even GM’s Colorado and Canyon sales numbers combined don’t even come close to that of the might Taco. So messing with a wining formula can be a little risky, the 2024 model year sees an all new redesign of this truck and today we're going to see if they got it right.

Exterior
Damn the new Tacoma looks so sick, love the new style Bold new styling, rugged, looks wide with the slim headlight design pulled to the edges, the grill is proportional, no giant size and split nicely with side vents. Not that easy to see on a white truck but the lines are so sweet on this TRD Off road. The new truck is more aerodynamic and this big chin spoiler is removable btw for either more cooling or for better clearance if off roading.

Big squared off fenders and creases giving the new Tacoma a real modern truck look. The new Taco has grown with a 115mm longer wheelbase on the full boxed TNGA F body on frame platform. Wheels always complete the look and the Tacoma gets 17-18” wheels depending on trim.

Really love how they’ve integrated a lot of features like the fender flares, the little lip on the rear roof, the bumper and lights that have a one piece shape but a very nice separated look.

In Canada, we will only see double cab 4x4’s at launch with the choice of either 5 or 6 foot beds. While automatic transmission Tacos are available with both sizes depending on trim, 6 speed manual transmissions only get the 5 ft option.

The cab height is 30mm higher now. You see the nice embossed Tacoma in the tailgate which is available with power up and down, you get the same quick release nay the rear tailgate, same as the tundra, reason its not kick because mud can block the sensor, easy hands free up with just your knee as well. The bed is is light and strong with a new sheet moulded compound construction and is 7% larger in volume, mainly its walls are taller to allow larger items to fit especially if you use a tonneau cover. And power rear window. Lots of tie down spots. This gas model has a built in 400W inverter which is a decent size for lots of your accessories or portable compressors, get into9 the hybrid model and that comes standard with a 2400W inverter.

On this TRD Off road trim along with the 17” wheels with chunky BF Goodrich trail aaTerrain tires, underneath you get metal skid plate protection for engine, fuel tank and differential and if you look through under the fender you’ll monotube bilstein shocks with piggy back remote reservoir. Off road versions also get front frame cross members for more support and strength.

Big news is gone with V6 and in with a new 2.4L Turbo 4 cylinder and a soon to come 2.4L Turbo with hybrid being their I-Force Max. The new turbo uses regular gas and has the exact same output of 278 horsepower but has an increased torque of 56 lb.ft to 317. Power goes through either a 6 speed manual or an 8 speed automatic now. Leaf springs in the rear have now been replaced with a new multi link coil spring suspension system. The new Toyota Tacoma is build off the new TNGA-F platform using a fully boxed frame. This platform is shared by both the new Tundra and Sequoia .

The 2020 TRD Offroad long bed I owned briefly had lots of annoyances and I sold it after just a year because it was so uncomfortable and annoying to drive. I'm glad to see that Toyota seems to have addressed a lot of those annoyances. I thought they were discontinuing the long bed like all the other brands have, so I was very surprised to see it return for 2024. I would have held off from purchasing my 2023 Pro4x if I'd known the Tacoma long bed was remaining. I might consider trading the Pro4x for a TRD Offroad long bed, but I expect the price with options will be downright offensive, hitting $50k or more. In any case, I'll wait until it's been tested in the real world for a couple years and, hopefully, the slowing market will demand lower prices.
  • at some angles (see 2:53 mark) the front quarter panel at the front door appears warped or pushed in or even kicked in. Gives the appearance the panel is caving in or crumpling and even buckling. Bulging at the tail light is awkward also; exterior styling is over the top with too many folds, creases, bulges makes it too busy and thus the reflections and lighting are showing some oddities.

Over the years, Toyota has only offered that bumper power plug on the Canadian trucks. Newsflash Toyota: there are plenty of markets in the US that get winter and want an engine block heater without a cord dangling out of the grill.
  • @ 1.57 that is a block heater plug not “accessories controlled from cab”. FYI

Toyota vehicles always have a ton of blank buttons which makes it look cheap. These new trucks are certainly not cheap.

I want to know the mpg difference with hideous airdam vs without. Some claim whopping 3 to 4, which is huge.
  • @Goodie247
If you buy the 2024 Tacoma be prepared to get your turbo/engine rebuilt every 100k miles or so if you’re lucky. Nissan Pro 4x for the win moving forward!
  • @seymorefact4333

The 3.5 V6 was garbage. They pulled that out of a camry and shoved it into a 4500lb truck. Thats like packing your camry full of people and cargo and driving it around. Mpg sucks and power delivery sucks. Pretty lethargic and inefficient. Didnt help that it was atkinson cycle either
