How will a shrinking population affect the global economy? | Counting the Cost

Published 2024-03-28
It has been described as a demographic catastrophe.

The Lancet medical journal warns that a majority of countries do not have a high enough fertility rate to sustain their population size by the end of the century.

The rate of the decline is uneven, with some developing nations seeing a baby boom.

The shift could have far-reaching social and economic impacts.

Enormous population growth since the industrial revolution has put enormous pressure on the planet's limited resources.

So, how does the drop in births affect the economy?

And regulators in the United States and the European Union crack down on tech monopolies.

The gender gap in tech narrows.

Economy can't be doing bad, housing prices is through the roof. There no need for more people, there isn't housing for everyone and there aren't jobs for those becoming adults.

"Idiocracy" (2005) is about that. Humanity is doomed because the # of children people have is inversely proporcional to their intelligence level 🙁

Yes it will have a negative on the worlds economy, we can live with it. Maybe we should discuss the positive side of a world with less people.

Environmental benefits of lower fertility rates is significant as well

Given resource overshoot, the speed of climate change, as well as climate migration and mass migration from still overpopulated countries, populations are still rising. Also, clean water availability, soil fertility and agricultural production, and fisheries are all declining. It’ll be interesting to see if the human population drops to a sustained one or two billion before food shortages force a similar population drop.
