Lego Fans Confuse Me.

Published 2024-05-16
Lego gifts with purchase are a lightning rod in the very-online Lego community: some people are disappointed they come with exclusive minifigs; others are disappointed if they don't come with enough exclusive minifigs. The upcoming Fell Beast GWP that accompanies Barad-Dur is one such example of this tension. Help us understand why by commenting below!

I’m just disappointed that the GWP doesn’t look good. 1 minifig is fine, but the build doesn’t match the quality of barad dur
  • Personal anecdote: the sail boat in 2021 has ruined my expectations for GWPs forever. Cause it's in my top 10 favorite sets ever. It's just so....happy. A very happy set. Yeah, no exclusive minifigs or anything, but now I compare other GWPs to the subjective feeling of "joy" that the sail boat gave to me.

Personally, I dislike the entire concept of the current LEGO GWP landscape. I really wish LEGO would stop with all GWPs that aren't just basic parts packs or a simple poly bags. The whole FOMO on a GWP because it has exclusive minifigures really irks me. If a GWP set is going to be so desirable, just make it a normal retail set. I also really hate how LEGO now even sends GWPs to LAN members to review, just adding to the pressure for fans to spend more money to get the GWP... I'll add that I am very glad that the Barad-Dur GWP is not that desirable now because of the lack of exclusive figures, so now I do not feel the need (pressure) to buy the set on day 1, and can better manage my LEGO budget.

I think the Felbeast itself could've looked better, but I think a Witch King would've been much better than a normal Nazgul

GWP does not influence if I will buy a set, but it does affect when I will buy a set. If it’s a very desirable GWP that I know will be expensive to buy in secondary market, then I will buy the set day one. I did that for Gringotts, Lion Knights Castle and 1989 UCS Batmobile. Otherwise, I’d rather wait for sale or double VIP.

My expectations were a little higher because the people who leaked it having 3 minifigs are usually very reliable, however I am not bothered about it not having those 2 extra figs, I'm still just excited to get it cause I really like the build, even if it's not perfect, I just wish that gwp's were available to purchase on their own, I think that would really solve most issues people have with them

I can imagine a Minas Tirith or Minas Morgul set coming next year with the Witch King of Angmar or Ride of the Rohirrim GWP possibly. Or, imagine, a giant Mûmakil set 😍

and this boys and girls, is why we always take leaks with a grain of salt. I think most of the reactions are due to what people believed they would get vs what they got in the end. I have never bought a set based of an existing GWP. I will wait for some double VIP promo to get it.

I guess the thing for me with the GWP isn't exactly the amount of figs, but rather the build itself. The Fell-Beast really should have been part of Barad-dur (even though that set on it's own is fantastic) or what I hope will be a new, far-improved set in the future. For example, a Pelinnor Fields Battle with the Witch-King, Eowyn, Pippin and Theoden as a more affordable, sizable but small set. The other thing that bugs me is that the little Mount Doom diorama with Frodo and Sam I don't think really works with Barad-dur. HOWEVER, as a GWP with the fig swapped out for, say, Isildur (maybe even Gil-galad or Elrond as a second fig), the Mount Doom thing would have worked. Even one of those figs as an exclusive would have been a very nice and fitting GWP. This is mainly because I don't see Lego making a set with Isildur or Gil-galad, and I was hoping that they'd have made an appearance in Barad-dur or the GWP, so its a shame we missed out on those characters. Basically what I'm trying to is: Barad-dur is an amazing looking set, and I'm getting it regardless. That said, the Fell-Beast either should have been included in the actual set (since it doesn't appear to be that complex a build, and the figure is likely what you say, a cobbled-together Nazgul with old/barely indistinguishable prints) or should have been reserved for an idea like I mentioned above. Its nice to have, there's incentive to get it, but at the end of the day, there was better options for a GWP. Anyways, thanks for the fun video!

I bought my Barad -dǔr on 6/1 at around 9:30 pm thinking I had three days, and did NOT get the GWP - it was ready unavailable. Totally unacceptable.

I feel like people were expecting it to be a Witch King of Angmar with a molded helmet similar to Sauron and the Mouth of Sauron

My expectation was that the Fell Beast wasn't going to look like the throwaway 3rd build from a sub-par 3-in-1 set. Especially the head, flat 1x2 curved slopes when the angled/notched version seems like the obvious choice to me. At least my complaint is about the easiest thing in the world to modify. 3 exclusive figs seemed like an extreme long shot to me, so only getting one lines up with my assumptions.
  • In Europe the Fell Beast sold out within a day. So if you were thinking about it, you can stop now.

I think the biggest problem in this case is the lack of small(er) LotR sets. People are starving for affordable LEGO sets in this Theme and all that we get are these huge sets. That's where all the frustration comes from, after that it's just easy to start complaining about everything, you're starving! 😜

GWP tends to be an incentive to buy direct from LEGO--and to do it as soon as a set is released. If the GWP is good, then the incentive works; if not, it does not. Disappointment with this GWP has less to do with minifig and more with the quality of Fell Beast design. There are MOCs with a similar piece count that are more compelling.

I pay little attention to GWPs. They are nice to get, but they do not affect my purchase decisions. I can’t believe people whine about something they are getting for free. If you like it, build it. If you don’t, give it away.

Didn't realize people were unhappy about this. I think it's great. I'm a bit new to Lego at 48. I'm a huge book fan. Dune and LOTR are my two favorites. So far, I've built a lego Sandworm diorama and this Ornithopter here in my profile picture. I'm looking forward to building Barad-dur. I think it looks sick. The Fellbeast is an added bonus. ⚔️ If I could add, I'm not surprised some hard core Lego fans are complaining. I have friends who collect Star Wars figures who complain when they release a slightly different version of the same figure they already bought a few months ago. I keep telling them, "You don't HAVE to buy that figure. Just get something else later on." 😂 Ha Ha! I should mention, I'm just as bad when it comes to multiple books and book covers of Dune. And all my actual reading is done on Kindle. But I just HAVE to have those different covers and books.

I think it all comes down to people having just too much of everything that we start to find an issue with everything.

It does happen. Manchester United stadium had a GWP with three exclusive minifigs representing the trinity of 3 legendary players. Although the execution was meh as they were only plain red torsos with number printing on the back. But none the less, they were desirable exclusive figs. Barcelona stadium also did the same but minifigs were fans instead of players.
