'Summer is killed', Lake Mead overflows with problems in 1983 similar to today's low water worries

Published 2022-06-27
In the summer of 1983 Lake Mead reached capacity. KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reported about the problems the high water was causing locals. Problems that are very similar to today's problems caused by low water.
There are four reports in this video from June 26 - 30, 1983.
The reporter for the first three stories is Mark Fierro and the reporter for the Hoover Dam spillway story is Cindy Benson.

Seems to be a recurrent theme of the Bureau of land management fucking things up through the years

I would love to just have one of those old pickup trucks they showed in this clip!

The more things change the more they stay the same. People always assume when something is a certain way it will continue to be that way.

My dad took me out to see the over flow! It was amazing! The sound, like a train. you could almost reach over the side of the dam and touch the water.

Ah. Back in the good old days...... Probably will never do that again!

We may never see levels that high, ever again!

Boats getting ruined and no water in a city with a million people in the middle of the desert are 2 wildly different issues

And today, Overton Bay is bone dry
  • In 1983 the highest level was 1225.83 feet. This woman at 1:43 was marked 1224.3 feet. She would of ended up a foot and a half under water.

You would have thought they would have built everything above the elevation of the dam knowing it could rise that high. Course nothing to worry about now

I believe Echo Bay is completely dry now. The lake is 185 feet lower than during this time.

my Grandpa Raymond Cecil emigrated from Winnipeg,Manitoba in 1929-30 to work the Boulder Dam/Hoover project as the Great depression was killing his family back home from poverty, sickness and starvation, he helped support his family to survive those very tough times. R.I.P Grandpa Raymond. Thanks for making me a 2nd Generation USofA Citizen and 2nd Gen Califorino. . water water everywhere with neery a drop to drink... Aye
  • That murdered guy in the barrel that was found at Lake Mead in 2022 was probably tossed in the lake one day before this 1983 video was recorded. 🤔
  • Me, Mom and Dad were there in 83 when the water went over the spill way. It was an amazing site!
  • It seems like it has been too many people too close to a fragile, unstable, poorly managed resource for decades.
  • It’s a damn shame! We can really use all that water nowadays.

Too much water is much better than not enough.
