THIS EPISODE:

Chicago-area residents woke up to a story that sounded like the plot line of their worst nightmare. Employees of Burr Oak Cemetery in suburban Alsip were accused of digging up bodies and re-selling the burial plots, disposing of bones in a remote area on the cemeteryā€™s northern edge. Investigators raided the cemetery on July 8, 2009, and what they found was WORSE than that nightmare.

Hundreds of graves had been desecrated. Grand Theft transformed into Money Scheme, which had been going on for some 5 years. More than 200 to 400 graves had been affected by this scandal.

JUST IMAGINE WHAT JEWELRY AND FAMILY HEIRLOOMS WERE STOLEN OFF THE BODIES.

As news of the despicable behavior broke, hundreds of worried relatives began descending on Burr Oak, worried that their loved ones were among those who had been dug up and discarded.

Among the revelations, investigators discovered the deteriorating casket of EMMETT TILL covered with a tarp amid other debris in a garage behind the cemeteryā€™s main office. Till had been exhumed in 2005 and reburied in a newer casket. His original casket was considered a relic of the civil rights movement. The public was shocked to learn it had been left to decay in such deplorable conditions. This really upset the Till family. The wife of one of the FBI anthropologists who worked for the Smithsonian Institution restored casket and it is now at an honored spot at the Museum of African American History in Washington.

Cemetery manager Carolyn Towns drew a 12-year prison sentence for her role in the crimes. Backhoe operator Maurice Dailey was sentenced to 3 years of probation, foreman Keith Nicks drew a 6 year prison term, and his brother Terrence Nicks was sentenced to 3 years.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named ā€œThe Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...

This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.

Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

What you did for Barbara Acklin was very touching and it made me willing to donate towards her stone. I canā€™t say nothing more but you sir I hope will be blessed more than you know for such a kind act
  • Makes me sick in my stomach every time I hear the details of his death. And then to see the aftermath. God bless that child. No one deserves to be treated that way. šŸ™šŸ½šŸ™šŸ½šŸ™šŸ½

Emmet Till was murdered before I was born but the story of his death was one I heard my whole life. Knowing that his remains were disturbed was a shock. Those employees proved that greed is a vicious mistress. Barbara Acklin with no headstone? There has to be a way for her to be remembered. Your wooden cross was very sweet though.
  • Doesn't it just suck that some people become famous for being murdered. Poor Emmett, just a kid. ā¤ļø

How sad a talented singer like Barbara was forgotten with no marker. Just like Jermaine Stewart didn't have one for 20 years. To me they left a mark on this world and deserve to shine. Thanks for the cross.
  • When I first learned of Emmitt in school and seen his face the day of his funeral I ran out the classroom crying. His story will forever stay with me. Thank you for showing his final resting place.

LOOKING AT EMMETT TILL EYE'S, HE COULD'VE WHISTLED AT ME, HE WAS SO HANDSOME, HE WAS JUST A CHILD AND THOSE COWARDS TORTURED HIM AND KILLED HIM, AND I REMEMBERED BARBARA SONG LOVE THAT MAKES A WOMAN RIP TO THE BOTH OF THESE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE

As like back then, the judicial system is still a joke.

What you did for Barbara Acklin's gravesite made me respect you on a deeper level. Sir, I wish I knew you in real life because you seem like a real genuine sort of person. You're a gem. šŸ’Æ

Some people don't deserve the air they breathe.............. šŸ™
  • As a white woman, I feel so bad for what happened to poor Emmett. I learned about him in high school. He didn't get to live his life all because of a lie
  • About a decade ago or so, I worked with a lady that personally knew Emmett "Bobo" Till. She stated to myself and other co-workers that "Bobo stuttered when he spoke." May she and Bobo Rest In Power PeacefullyāœŠ
  • The cross marker was a really nice gesture my friend, God bless you
  • @Darbysmommy
You are an incredible human being. Compassionate, kind, respectful, and generous. Thank you for starting this channel. I have watched several shows and read about Emmett Till and the monsters that murdered him, and his momā€™s insistence on having an open casket. It is true what they say, humans are the most dangerous of all animals.
  • Seeing acts of kindness, humility and thoughtfulness like making and installing the cross for Barbara Acklin restore my faith in humanity. You're a good man, Ron.
  • Emmett till was such a handsome dapper little guy so sad what happened to him
  • This lady should be arrested for her Deadly Lie šŸ˜ šŸ˜Ŗ !!Along with those Evil men ! His mother passed aswell and she never seen justice for her son šŸ˜¢ šŸ’”

Ron, seeing this for the first time today. I was so moved by this. You told the story of Emmett Till with dignity and much feeling. Then, you brought us the story of super talented Barbara Acklin. It just gives me hope for the good in the world, how you went back and brought the cross you made for Barbara šŸ’œšŸ’œ the generosity of your heart!
