Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have come together to form the Alliance of Sahel States.
Each is ruled by a military junta - and that's led to a split from the larger West African regional bloc, ECOWAS.
The three military rulers have pledged to support each other against outside threats and internal security challenges.
But can they find success by going it alone?

Or will a divided Sahel region make regional challenges even more difficult to tackle?

Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom

Guests:

Erwan De Cherisey - Specialist in African armed forces who has been embedded with military operations in Cameroon, Nigeria and Gambia.

Ahmedou Ould Abdallah - Former Foreign Minister of Mauritania and President of the Sahel Sahara Security Strategy Center.

Alkassoum Abdourahmane - Permanent Secretary of the Sahel International Solidarity Forum. He specialises in humanitarian and development issues in the Sahel region.

I sincerely don’t see the problem in African nations deciding to create an alliance to protect their sovereignty! Everyone does it! This is a sign of solidarity! People just don’t want to see Africa rise!!
  • The Ecowas shall never and will not win. I want a good Africa for Africans. ❤
  • Aljazeerah if you want to spread the truth you have to invite the leaders of the 3 countries... do not intervew slaves.

The countries of the AES are the only independent countries in Africa. Love to the 3 leaders from Nigeria. ECOWAS is a Western asset.
  • 3 strong black leaders who see liberal democracy as a tool of subversion and chaos. Thank God these men are in power in their fellow nations I hope prosperity and a great future for their nations
  • Ecowas has failed for 50 years and we are discussing going back. Europeans despite 100 years of exploitation are in debt. Where did it all go?

Mali is proud Nation! in 15 th century King of that region,Mansa Muso was travelling to Mekka! He was accompanied by 60000 servants and hundreds of Elephants and more camels,He distributed gold in huge amount to everyone,He created such devastation of gold price that He regreted later! He is the richest ever born man!
  • That will be a good alliance. They can trade with each other whatever they have to offer to each other.

Best Alliance Africa has ever seen aside the OAU started by Kwane Nkrumah. These are military leaders who truly are working for the people. All Other Unions in Africa has not achieved anything meaningful.

I really love this pac these countries made. An attack on one an attach on all. This has never happened before in Africa. Cuz the west always tried to divide African countries. Hope this this stronger and the people can trust and support these leaders
  • A very critical point that was missed- Niger 🇳🇪, Mali 🇲🇱 and Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 could never do a mission, without the approval of France 🇫🇷, also couldn’t buy certain degrees of arms unless France warrants it. And the so called G5 sahel, never did joint missions across borders. Counter attacks were only commissioned by Paris. This alone has a heavy impact on the response to terrorism. It’s only now after Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso left ECOWAS, that ECOWAS is ready to intervene against terrorism, even raise funds against this extreme deterioration of security.

It’s interesting how no one is linking the political turmoil in France atm to the loss of control of these states… the two are very much linked

You are bringing people who don't have any experiances with the AES to speak about AES I'm wondering who fund this channel
  • It’s amazing how some people that don’t belong in Africa, have any idea 💡 of how and what is in our best interests.
