A lot of people take baking soda for acid reflux. Is this good or bad?

The stomach should be extremely acid with a pH between 1-3. This is normal. You need your stomach acids to be at that pH to digest proteins, kill microbes, and absorb minerals.

When food goes through the stomach and then into the small intestine, the pancreas releases bicarbonate.

Our bodies are supposed to have bicarbonate in the small intestine, not the stomach, to neutralize the stomach acid so it doesn’t damage the small intestine. Bicarbonates are alkaline.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. If you’re putting baking soda into your stomach, you’re going to mess up your digestion down the road.

Instead of just trying to treat the symptoms, you need to ask yourself why you might be getting acid reflux to begin with.

Normally, the valve at the top of the stomach isn’t shutting, so the stomach acid is going up into the esophagus. This could happen due to a vitamin B1 deficiency or because you don’t have enough stomach acid. The valve actually closes if you have enough stomach acid.

Taking apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride can help increase stomach acid and potentially help with acid reflux. A combination of betaine hydrochloride and zinc carnosine may also be effective.

Potential side effects of taking too much sodium bicarbonate over time:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Kidney damage
• Depressed breathing
• Worsened cardiac heart failure
• Cerebral hemorrhage
• Calcium deficiency
• Potassium deficiency
• Belching/bloating

Well I'm not convinced. My parents have used it almost everyday of their life and they are 92 and I have as well. Have zero symptoms on your list But I believe everyone is DIFFERENT and need to listen to your body. Thanks for posting.

Been taking a little baking soda now and then for 75 years. I know for sure it can relieve a lot of misery. I don't plan on overdoing it, but don't think I will ever give that one up. It's just to darn effective on the overall GI track plus it really seems to help clear my lungs as well. Yep I know, I'm the only experimental rat I have, but I'm still here and many I have known are not.
  • My sister was in stage 4 kidney failure and one of her kidney doctors told her to start taking it because it would help her kidneys. Her numbers have gotten much better since and she now at this time doesn't need a transplant. I have no information on how long they told her to take it for or anything like that, but I am surprised that Berg put one of the side effects as kidney failure

I have taken baking soda for years and I mean over 30 years. I'm almost 60 years old with no health problems and not on any medications.

To the speaker Soda Bicarb cured my irritable bowel syndrome from regular specialist medication. Cheers

ACV is amazing. I drink one tablespoon in glass of water several days a week. Sometimes squeeze fresh lemon juice in as well. Tip - rinse your mouth out with water afterwards if you can because vinegar can erode tooth enamel.

Thank you, love your videos and my digestive system is doing much better.
  • apple cider vinegar is great, also celery cut up into small pieces for nibbles, cucumber works too. Salads are great. My reflux is because of bronchiectasis which makes me cough. Thanks for all the great videos.

My friend has CKD, doctor describes sodium bicarbonate 3 times daily. Why did doctor Berg say it is not good for kidneys?
  • @Joe-xo3xy
@Dr. Eric Berg DC hope you are well? Thanks for the videos , they are appreciated. Quick Question-is it okay if I wash my lettuce leaves and other veggies in baking soda solution, I feel these veggies have thin leaves and will absorb a good amount of the baking soda. I am not sure if this is a safe practice, your opinion will be appreciated. Regards Joey

Omg. I didn’t know this. I’ve just started getting heart burn in the last 2 years and I’ve been taking a shot of baking soda and water for it. I’ll try the ACV. Thanks
  • Hi Dr Eric Berg, I am a big follower of your vlogs. I had a question which is if I can consume cream of tartar to compensate my potassium deficiency in a regulated amount. Thank you.
  • FYI, this is amazing. I accidentally watched one of Dr. Berg video taking baking soda if you have high uric acid and during that day I have gout. I tried baking soda before I went to bed to sleep, and the next day, my gout was gone instantly. I'm happy to watch one of his videos. Thank you, Lord Jesus, and thank you, Dr. Berg

I’m a firm believer in using sodium bicarbonate for its many benefits. I drink it, brush my teeth with it and I have a small bowl of Sodium bicarbonate and water (saturated)for hand and nail cleaning to kill fungus and germs. I also use that SB saturated water for itching areas on my skin. Works great all the time for many of my conditions. It will expel cancer. I know that because I did it. I would not condemn Sodium Bicarbonate because of this video. That’s a statement from own experience and research.

Australia 🇦🇺 SODABIC is a product of Sodium Bicarb I can buy in Australia. I used to make my own capsules buying Sodium Bicarb in the supermarkets (baking aisle) and empty capsules from Chemist. I take 1 capsule each morning on waking for past 5yrs and I’ve stopped getting kidney stones. The alkalinity stops the stones from developing.
