Making a Basket Weave/Ribbon Style Cutting Board Tutorial

Publicado 2021-03-12
Hi, in this woodworking tutorial video I show you how to make this basket weave/ribbon style cutting board. I show you the steps I take as well as the dimensions that I used for this size board. The board itself is made from Walnut, White Hard Maple, and African Mahogany.

NOTE: For some odd reason the audio for the first half of the video disappeared a few days after uploading. The following text is what was said during the spot the audio was messed up. "This board will consist of three species of wood. I’ll be using walnut, maple, and mahogany, but any three woods of contrasting colors will work. I rip down my mahogany board to just over 37mm , since I will plane it down to size later. I’ll need to cut 24 squares out of the mahogany later on, so you’ll need about 40in in length. I then cross cut my maple to 45 in in length, and cut two, 25 mm strips out of it. Then I cut a 8mm wide walnut strips, totaling 180inches in length. Next I planed my maple strips to exactly 25mm wide, and my walnut strips to 7mm."

I personally think this is one of the most beautiful boards I have seen. Maybe the design is not as complex as some others but I believe this is why it is so beautiful.
  • Thank you for posting, it inspired me to build one, I used purple heart for the squares, canary wood for the longer pieces and for the skinny I used tropical walnut. It came out beautiful just like the one you did.

Wow... One of the most beautiful cutting boards I've ever seen. Beautiful...
  • Try alternating your clamps. Put half on top and half on opposite side to prevent warping during glue up. Nice piece.
  • Nice piece and I appreciate the detailed info. I added it to my to do list
