How do kids age 3-12 years old draw a song? 'Kids Draw Free event

I had a brilliant time with kids and parents at the weekly Kids Draw Free event at the Old Townhall, Stamford on Sunday. When founder Alex Virvo asked me to come and sing songs while the kids draw me, my first response was "Why don't they draw a song instead?". My song Born By The Water has a 'stompy' sound to it, and many of the lyrics talk about sun, trees, loons, sky etc. So I figured I could show the kids the official video, then show them some print outs of examples of the sun, trees, water etc.
I placed these internet pictures on the colorful desks. I then said to everyone that, while I'm singing the song, I want everyone to raise their hand when they hear the word '"water". You should have seen the hands go up, time and time again. Sometimes I couldn't finish the song because I was smiling so much. Some of the kids looked like they were a rocket about to lift off, arms pointing excitedly to the sky.
Well, I can't believe how great the pictures were. You'll see them in the video: the children's photos are the square images I show from left to right. In the video section where we're all together - singing and stomping - you'll see pictures along the bottom: they were the ones I printed out as examples. The order of the images on the wall is the order that words/images appear in the song. So, now I have a video for Born By the Water AND a photo collage. I'm pleased as punch!!
The kids were super and took to it like ducks to water, or should I say loons to water (an in-joke for kids and parents who attended :-)). Once we gather the video footage and pics, I'll work with Kids Draw Free to upload a video that shows you what we did, how much we laughed and smiled and how much fun kids and parents had, even the shy ones. Please stay tuned for another Sunday where we draw a song and let our imaginations run wild.
