  • Well, I'm planting my seeds this weekend. I'm not trying to feed my family for the whole year, just to try my hands in the garden for another year (as compared to a spur of the moment last year). I'm a whole lot more educated and prepared than last year. I'm not a head of house, breadwinner, or homemaker; I'm a 17, soon to be 18, year old guy who wants to garden. I would love to lead a self-sufficient life and it seems homesteading is just that. You and the many other wholesome homesteaders are a great encouragement that this dream can become a reality. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ, Keep up the good work!
  • I planted some basil in large pots last year and put them next to my broccoli (not on purpose). I saw two broccoli worms the entire season! (Weโ€™re in Utah.)

    Tomato math = chicken math ๐Ÿงฎ ๐Ÿ˜‚
  • @wazowski6709
My tomato math factors in birds. I now plant extra of everything to share with garden critters, family & friends. Love your videos so much. A big G'DAY from Australia ๐Ÿ˜

Love your logic and attitude, I can't walk to good but I'm planting tomatoes in a pot this year on my patio, I'm 71 Jill and you inspire me. I can't do canning but I love fresh home grown tomatoes. Thank you!

All those years in making mud pies as a little kid finally pays off in learning about soil consistency so you can make soil blocks! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜† Got my block maker on order but who knows if Iโ€™ll get it in time fir the start of our season.
  • We aim just to grow as much as possible! Surplus goes to the food bank or is given to families in need โค๏ธ
  • @Quiscalus777
1:27 A quicker way to make the soil blocks is to press the maker into the soil with some force rather than scooping it in. :)
  • @brentderksen
A cold room with damp sand will keep your carrots firm just like the ground, for future reference.
  • @mybusylife2158
185 plants have been started in our apartment in the last two weeks. Excluding the stuff that will go directly into the soil. We'll see if it's going to be enough.
  • That soil block maker is so great! I need to invest in one. Last year I used toliet paper rolls and potting soil to get my seeds started ๐Ÿ˜‚ we were in a pinch and it worked ๐Ÿ˜

Jus spoke to my wife about how to figure out how much food for me her and my daughter and that we need to prepare and wow here this goes.. God bless :)

Corn is bad as Johnson grass. But I do plant some popcorn corn. Once I ground some up and made cornbread it was really wild.
  • Last year I dried my carrots. Great for soup and stews,. which is what I use them for the most.
  • @shaunamarie9346
Daniel on Arms family homestead uses one of those soil block maker.

Where I used to miss was not harvesting the produce in time, allowing it to go off. Then I bartered harvesting help with a neighbor which gave us enough for me to put up, food for their use, and extra for the coop. They only go bad if not picked. It is important for us to plant soon enough to get harvest before summer heat causes damage or bugs.
  • @1TsuNami
Oh My Goodness! That was SO helpful. Thank you Jill. ๐Ÿฅฐ. Itโ€™s so hard for me to know where to start, how much to grow, how much room I need, ugh I could go on. This is exactly what I needed.
  • @severenkoski856
This makes me want to keep better track of what I grow & how much we use and even how much we waste. New gardening goals for me this Summer.
