How will posh, privately educated kids cope at a state school in the UK? Subscribe to Our Stories: bit.ly/3lzSXhv

In the UK, education is one of the big political battlefields for governments and opposition alike. It also seems to represent somewhere where the class war still endures. Opponents of private schooling deride the privileged few who seem to rise to the top of most professions. The state system is also under fire. Hundreds of schools have been classed as failing, teachers are leaving in droves - and thousands of children are left, it is claimed, without proper qualifications or any prospect of a decent job in the future.

In a unique experiment, a private head, his state school counterpart and six of their pupils spend a week in each other's worlds. Does going private really give you a first class advantage, and does a state education really mean second-rate? This programme unpicks the educational gulf dividing Britain's school system.

Every time I watch British show, there must be an iconic “orchestral” backsound
  • "You only use this school for five years and you're out in the world for about 60 years." Damn that hit hard.
  • ‘You’re in this school for 5 years and you’re out in the world for 60 years’ - I love this.

The private head teacher actually seems very genuine and humble, I think he would be an amazing head teacher in any school!

"It's not what you know...it's who you know." She is exactly correct.
  • I think it would be better for the private school to visit an actually rough school. So they can really see how the system is failing children
  • Hearing the private school girl mention her luck was really insightful and incredible to hear.
  • I just want to appreciate the moment at 14:41. The slow turn of the head like, "did you really just do that", and the "it doesn't suite your look mate" 😂

The thought that the self-confidence element being higher in the independent school students COULDN’T POSSIBLY have anything to do with money and a sense of security absolutely baffles me.
  • The head teacher wanted to know if there was something she could implement to help her students compete with private school kids. What a great mindset!!!

I went to a horrible public school in a very poor area, had to move schools due to bullying. School was very difficult emotionally for me and when I went to university in Bath, a very wealthy area, most people I met were from private schools. Completely different people, much kinder, smarter and more inclusive. They even talked about how much they miss school and loved going, I could never relate, I hated school and I couldn’t wait to leave. I am so happy and proud of myself for ending up in the same place as much more privileged kids, but I cant help but feel so sad for my younger self and other children going to public schools and living in poverty.
  • The private school kids mentioning 'messing around' several times is interesting. How they have been brought up to value their time in a different way
  • State schools aren't just for teaching, they are primarily dealing with huge social problems. These situations need to be met way more holistically and not just in schools.

She is asking, “what it is in private schools which is leading to more high prestige careers.” Well, certainly a better education starting with a much lower teacher to student ratio, but also very wealthy families with connections to politics and business. Let’s not fool ourselves that these connections are not the key to these “high prestige careers.”

I love how the state school is a fancy one too. Imagine if they sent them to an actually rough school.

it's not just the school, it's the kids home environment, their parents, their upbringing, the food they eat, the entertainment they consume, the activities they do, it's everything.

Wow. I dunno how indicative this is of actual contrast in such UK schools, but here in the US you could see far greater contrast even between two public schools a few miles from one another.
  • Its easy to be confident and to give it all to your studies while you dont need to worry about the food on the table, the rent your parents are tryint to pay or the fact that hobbies, dreams cost so much.
  • I felt the difference from the moment the kids started shaking hands when they first met. Private school children showed confidence.
  • I was moved to tears when the Kurdish girl outlines how her family was split up for seven years due to political unrest in her home country. Even though she's settled in the UK, I cannot imagine how devastating that must have been for her! I admire her determination and drive so much.
