Preeti Dixit was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 45. Until then, she was masking — a coping strategy which involves suppressing certain behaviours that others find 'weird' and sometimes mimicking other acceptable behaviours. Simply put, Preeti was hiding her autistic self from others. She was misdiagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder owing to overlapping behavioural symptoms. Then her son Rohan was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and she found similarities with him, leading to her own diagnosis.
