Peter Windsor: Verstappen Was Being a Racing Driver!

In this interview with @peterwindsor we discuss the Austrian GP and whether Max Verstappen was to blame for the incident with Lando Norris, was the movement in the braking zone at the Austrian Grand Prix dangerous, should Lando Norris have moved left in turn 3 like Verstappen had done in 2023 when overtaking Carlos Sainz? Is there a risk of F1 becoming too sanitised if the FIA penalise aggressive defensive driving? Were the FIA to blame for penalising Verstappen in real time and should they have issued Lando's 5 second penalty sooner and would it have changed the complexion of the Austrian Grand Prix if Red Bull and Max Verstappen had know about the penalty? And what will happen at Ferrari if Lewis Hamilton under performs expectations?

  • It is shocking how much hate max gets for being an aggressive and entertaining racer… the British bias reinforced by the media and broadcasters is absolutely ridiculous and this narrative will be poison in silverstone. I’ve seen so many drivers make on the edge moves and the reaction is so different, Fernando Alonso is a prime example and there are very recent situations you could refer back to. Max is a generational talent and he fights hard, that’s why every wheel to wheel battle he’s involved in is so exciting. He has been near perfect since the beginning of 2021 (regardless of your views of how that season ended he won more races than Lewis that season and Lewis had 6 years of momentum under his belt) and we have all been crying out for another titanic battle to replicate 2021, at the first sight of a championship battle the world is in outrage and we turn straight to hate. Do we want to be entertained or not guys! Should max just pull over next time and let him past?!

British press is disrespectful to Verstappen and tells the English public what they want to hear
  • @BrendanP
Say it louder for people at the back Peter! People want hard racing and then cry like babies when it happens. Max was just doing his job, Lando could've moved to the left but was equally as stubborn. Racing incident end of story.
  • @joebond8214
Lando could have avoided the collision just as Max avoided Lando on both of the previous two laps.

I respect you Peter Windsor, great takes. Max didnt do much wrong to be honest, he defended like a GOAT does, what do people expect?
  • Thank you Cameron F1, yes Max was being a racing driver, and many people didn't realize that it was exactly what we want to see (not the accident, but the racing). Both tried some things that were on the edge, but that is pure racing
  • Lando " If he doesn't apologize I won't be his friend anymore ☹️" Max " I come here to win not to finish 2nd" Can you guess who's a 3x world champion and who's a 1 time gp winner ? The mentality between the two couldn't be so further apart , I really think Norris is a talented driver but he has no edge he's had the faster car in about 3/4 races and still is struggling to win .I honesty can't believe Cameron' calls Norris a God tier driver , God tier ?! and labels Leclerc as the 2nd coming of Jean Alesi but Norris is british so ofc you'll gravitate towards him even subconsciously 🤷‍♂️ put Leclerc in that Mclaren and he'd be winning and consistently challenging Max no doubt it , Why ? Cause he's PROVED it Bahrain 22 , Austria 22 , Silverstone 19 , Saudi 22

How refreshing to hear someone like Peter Windsor about this incident. He is spot on!

My main complaint is the delay between Landos obligational time penalty. And the decision of the stewards. Black flag is decided quickly through sensors. But penalty for additional tracklimit is delayed. With Max and Lando knowing there was already a time penalty. It would likely not have resulted in this fight.

Lando was throwing his car inside and outside recklessly and desperately. If you stick your car on the outside, you do so at your own peril, people are so used to accommodating failure and celebrating mediocrity that when a ruthless winner comes along like Max, they find him too aggressive or abrasive. Ironically, Lando pushing Max onto the grass in Spain was considered hard, fair racing...
  • @Milkywayboy
Go watch both onboards! They tell the story. Max didn’t move on his onboard, lando ran into him
  • @willusmax6662
There was more room for Lando then for Max when Lando pushed him on the grass. I think Lando realy need some glasses for his birthday.
  • @Grafzaaiers
The British bias is going nuts over this. He's been driving flawlessly for 2,5 seasons, had great fights with 0 contact with LeClerc in '22. Had to come through the entire field on multiple occasions. Now he makes one small single mistake (if it even was a mistake, it was perfect positioning imo) and the British go wild. just proves how much Verstappen is in their heads.
  • @theklaus7436
The British media is so biased because darling Lando punctured his car and drove into max. Who was defending himself to the limit. And I was chocked by the post race so hysterical like a witch hunting! Luckily we here heard a nuanced conversation. Opposite the post race especially Parmer.
  • @jh335
Max is as aggressive like Senna and Schumacher. As soon his helmet is on he becomes a race monster. And I like that very much!!
  • @4rdF1Hunny
3:23 on last year’s highlights shows Sainz doing the same thing to Max, but Max doesn’t shunt it into the side of Carlos.
  • Peter Windsor you are 100%.Correct , couldn't have said it better myself.
  • @smanqele
The way Palmer was so hell bent on blaming Max, it seemed odd for representing a journalistic/commentator perspective
