The may be the highest level “joke” that’s ever been told, where it’s a requirement for you to be the greatest Elvis impersonator who ever lived in order to deliver the punchline.

Elvis himself said Andy was amazing and by far the best he had ever seen doing him. He was very flattered and had nothing but great things to say about Andy. So sad we lost them both way to soon.

The entire act works up to that final "...thank you very much." as the punchline for everything. Genius.

What I love about Andy Kaufman is that he will dedicate most of his act to the set up of one joke. A true comedic genius.

Andy performed this only five months before Elvis died. And I've read that the King had tapes of this incredible performance. RIP to both.

I watched this Carson episode when it first aired on NBC. I still remember being blown away by Kaufman's Elvis. It still stays with me, some 41 years later. And yes, Elvis loved Andy's Elvis impression, more than any other impersonator.

And you can hear Carson absolutely lose it right when he drops back into the Foreign Man voice and says, "Thank you veddy much." Johnny was in on the joke and GOT it, man.

Andy was brilliant. He could make you feel uncomfortable one second, laugh uproaressly the next, and overall be in awe of his incredible talents. I loved him!

I remember watching this episode of Carson and was blown away along with everyone else.

The “thank you very much” at the very end was priceless. You can hear Carson explode in laughter when he says it. That has to be one of the best acts on Carson ever.
