Since hella people in the comments clearly weren't paying attention... They're not going to mine the lithium, it's being pumped up with hydrothermal water. They take the heat energy and the lithium and pump the water right back down. It would literally be the most environmentally friendly source of lithium in the world. Australia mines it. This is a very good thing for the environment and Imperial Valley.

We needed self-driving cars yesterday. And more FREQUENT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.
-
It's not that they didn't care about it. The fact that before the price of lithium was too low to mine it. Now that it's in demand the price has risen. Making it worth mining.
-
Damn. Invest 500 million and make 7.2 billion dollars sounds amazing
-
Now this is what will provide energy security for the USA.
-
The California economy just keeps growing and growing.
-
Literally no one is calling it Lithium Valley
-
Was about to say "I'd totally live there!" and then came the poison lake, toxic asthma causing dust clouds, and the impending environmental impacts of lithium extraction.
-
One more thing we can make here, which is one less thing we have to import from a hostile country like China. How is this not a win? Of course the environment is a major concern (since mining is bad for it) but if it’s done right and with care, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Especially considering all the jobs and electric cars this lithium will produce which will take ICE polluting vehicles off the road and help fight climate change. Let’s do it :D

Slab City may be in for some changes
-
I live in the area of the Salton Sea and it’s like an episode of Breaking Bad. It’s where you live when nobody else wants you. I guarantee no one their is going to reap the benefits of lithium mining.
-
We bought a 2017 Volt in March 2020. Very happy with this car.
-
You can bet that community is gonna remain the same after attracting all that resource.
-
As a resident of El Centro and the Imperial Valley Area I really hope we are able to reap the benefits and fix the Salton sea. But I highly doubt that.
-
So are they using geothermal and collecting the Lithium as well as making energy or are they just pumping it up to just collect the Lithium. If its just Lithium shut it down. If its geothermal and there collecting the Lithium as a byproduct then ok its fine. Thoughts.
-
I hope the toxic Lithium slurry that can be left after extraction is disposed of or processed safely and I also hope the community around the Salton Sea are able to recover from decades of neglect!
-
Awesome news!
-
Tell me who is hiring?! I'm on my way to become a lithium miner ...
-
Wow … no dependency on China
-
This is very (( very )) GOOD news ! Go Imperial Valley ! GO USA !
