How to Improve Your Heavy Leg After a Stroke with 5 Easy Bed Exercises

In this video, we'll show you 5 simple bed exercises for stroke patients experiencing 'heavy leg' that can help improve your mobility, strength and ability to pick up that leg. These exercises are easy to do and can be done from the comfort of your own bed.

Stroke patients experience “heavy leg” because of several factors. A patient recovering from stroke might have weakness, spasticity, and poor movement control. During their stroke recovery, they will percieve this as having a heavy leg.

Here are some bed exercises for stroke patients experiencing "heavy leg" that you can do on your bed:

1. Leg Lift: Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly lift one leg off the bed, keeping it straight, and hold it for a few seconds before lowering it back down. Repeat with the other leg. Do 10 repetitions on each leg.

2. Knee Bends: Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly bend one knee and bring it up towards your chest. Hold it there for a few seconds before lowering it back down. Repeat with the other leg. Do 10 repetitions on each leg.

3. Hip Adduction: Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly move one leg out to the side bring it back in, keeping it straight, and then bring it back in towards the other leg. if that is still difficult for you, keep your knees, bent and let gravity assist your knee to go in towards the other knee. Repeat with the other leg. Do 10 repetitions on each leg.

4. Hip Extension: Lie on your stomach with your legs straight. Slowly lift one leg off the bed, keeping it straight, and hold it for a few seconds before lowering it back down. Repeat with the other leg. Do 10 repetitions on each leg.

5. Nose to your toes: Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly move your ankles up and down, as if you were pressing on a gas pedal. Focus more on pointing your foot and toes towards your nose. Do 10 repetitions.
