Quite a lot has changed since this video came out. Some changes that have happened as of December 2022: 1. Queen Elizabeth II is no longer the reigning monarch. Her heir, Prince Charles, succeeded her following her death and became King Charles III in September 2022. 2. Barbados became a republic in November 2021 and no longer has a monarch. 3. The United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union (cf. 1:57) following Brexit. 4. The status of the British Indian Ocean Territory as one of the British Overseas Territories is currently in limbo after the International Court of Justice ruled in February 2019 that the UK unlawfully separated the Chagos Archipelago from the rest of Mauritius. This ruling was affirmed by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in January 2021.

When I meet people online, they ask me where I'm from and I reply with "Wales" then they ask "where's that?" and I reply with "A little country next to England" and then they say "Ireland?". It kills me on the inside everytime.

I’m Scottish and have lived and worked in the US for three years. Everyone here thinks my accent is Irish. I don’t mind a bit, but it gets embarrassing when people start going on about their Irish roots and where their Irish ancestors came from. Americans tend to talk fast and loud, so it can take a little time to get it into the conversation I’m not Irish. On one occasion I didn’t want to embarrass a lovely elderly lady among her friends, so I became Irish for one evening.

As a Welsh Brit, this is really encouraging to find someone from the other side of the pond who knows what they're talking about. Will be saving this to circulate.

for the people that are saying that they don’t care, that’s fine, but at least keep in mind that this does bug people who are from these places. if you know this, it’s refreshing to them because a lot of people don’t like being referred to as being from ireland when they are from england or another territory. it’s like being korean but being called chinese, or being hispanic but being called spanish.

Slight correction of shortly after 0:23: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are absolutely not "sovereign" countries; they are constituent countries of the sovereign United Kingdom.
  • As an American viewer watching this again, I found it quite a useful explanation of the difference between "England", "Great Britain", and the sovereign state known as the United Kingdom! These differences are the reason why I have sometimes heard it said that Elizabeth II was not a "Queen of England" (to use the common, informal phrase), but a "Queen of the United Kingdom": because the United Kingdom isn't England! Thanks for the video!

Barbados became a republic on November 30th, 2021 and left The Commonwealth Realm on that same day. The way they became a Republic is by amending their constitution. And that's how Barbados became a Republic. 🇧🇧
