I can't imagine watching your friend getting mauled by a bear and not getting a shot off. Obviously, you'd be concerned about hitting your friend but to let them get mauled to death might be enough reason to at least try.

I AM truly impressed that a total stranger would walk into a bear killing two people and attract the bear’s attention away from the victims — to defend them! This is TRUE ALTRUISM. Wow! And even then, more people (new/other strangers) also fearlessly jump in to defend. Finally someone with a gun kills the bear. Unimaginable bravery. These were regular people, not trained hunters. Bravo.

This is a horrific way to die or survive. I cannot imagine being eaten alive.

Johan is the sweetest thing! DO NOT feel guilty for getting attacked, we share this world with some truly amazing forces! Just so grateful he and his daughter survived and the rescue crew was just as happy, I promise. A wonderful father anybody would be so lucky to have! Johan is a tough dude, some people don't survive 1 bear attack, he survived THREE and multiple falls off the mountain. wow

I'd rather be shot by a friend versus being mauled by a Grizzly.

Going into bear country without a gun or at least bear spray...and knowing how to use it is pretty much the definition of a really bad idea. I am really pleased that some made it out of these horrific bear attacks...but not surprised some didn't. Peace to all.

These people going to a known brown bear country with no firearm or bear spray is ridiculous. They put themselves in danger and the animal in danger as they will kill any bear that attacks a human. So irresponsible. I'm glad these people survived. I hope people learn from stories like these. Even when I go Turkey hunting I carry a sidearm Just in case I run into a bear or a cougar. My compound bow or shotgun with bird shot won't cut it. Especially if the animal closes the distance quickly or catches you by surprise, a shotgun or a compound bow is worthless in those situations. Bear spray and side arm both together are a must.

The best way to survive a bear attack is not being around them

Lewis and Clark had heard rumors of the grizzly--the size of an ox, enormous strength, great claws and teeth, unmatched ferociousness, able to withstand repeated shots from a rifle. They thought "They can't possibly be that bad." Then when they encountered them for themselves, they found that they were even WORSE than the rumors.

If attacked by any large predator,always go for the eyes and never give up!

The pain these victims had to have been in is beyond comprehension.

For all these adventurous ppl why go in these territories with no protection no gun just vulnerable to these animals and your in their house basically smarten up ppl
