I've done a lot worse. I had a work truck break down so I rented a vehicle from Enterprise and threw a bunch of equipment in it so I could keep working. After a day or two it was about 11:00 PM the brakes on the rental were metal to metal. I drove it back to Enterprise. Found a similar vehicle in the lot. Transferred all my shit and I made a key for it. I left them a note explaining what I did. I left the keys for the broken car with the note in their night drop box. I even wrote down the mileage of my new self imposed rental. That morning they called me and asked me to bring the car back. They politely asked me to never rent a car from them again. I told them I was on call 24 hours and they left me no choice. lol All good I rented another vehicle somewhere else until my truck was fixed. Got to do what we got to do.

why not just uncalibrate the thermostat, so when you set it to 70 you get 60 degrees. Then you don't have to go back and unhack(put the wires back to original) when you leave!
